510814 2006-12-31 01:27:00 I have a cd that is half white with WIndows XP on it and the other half is purple with hp deskjet on it, is this the one I am looking for.
I live in Henderson Auckland, How much do you think it would cost to do the job.

HP Deskjet is a printer, so it's unlikely to be the right CD (It will be the drivers/program for your printer only)

You want to find a CD that has printed on the front "Windows XP Home or Professional", it will also have holographic look to the front of the CD if it is the genuine Win XP program CD

I imagine that for a technician to call out and do an install would cost $150ish. You might be better to take the comp into a shop and leave it with them for a few hours.

510815 2006-12-31 01:31:00 Hi foxy

I have a HP intel pentium 4 processer 266ghz 40gb hard drive,
i have a program under programs called PC recovery and it has
HP application recovery, HP PC recovery CD-DVD Creator, HP PC recovery tools CD, and HP PC system recovery.

Yes the disc i found is an orginal disc from my collection of discs, I keep them all, incase one day i need them, but cannot seem to find the one speedy asked me for, except for the one I told you about.

510816 2006-12-31 01:38:00 Some of those programs under PC recovery look hopeful.

At this point you have nothing to lose by trying those HP programs. I would start 1st with the 'HP PC System recovery' one. I haven't used the HP software, but I would guess it will give you a step by step guide.

I haven't read all the way back through your thread, but have you tried XP System restore? It's likely that you can only restore your comp to when you installed SP2 though... so maybe not much help.

510817 2006-12-31 03:05:00 Ok guys I have done a system recovery, what do i do now, I have no idea, what I got rid of over the years, but it seems to have kept most of my stuff, but brought back stuff I deleted, like microsoft money and works task launcher, as I got a disk for microsoft office, I will have to reupload this wont I, how will I know that everything is running smoothly, should I go and try the things that would not work before. dunno (1572)
510818 2006-12-31 03:22:00 Hi Dunno, that sounds hopeful if it brought back old programs etc. No worries, you can uninstall the ones that you don't want again... do it through add/remove programs in the control panel though.

Have a go at a defrag if you want... if it starts ok you can always stop it for now instead of running it all the way through.

Check in your programs folder to see if Office is there. It may not have been uninstalled when you did the recovery, just the desktop icon removed. If it's still there and works when you click on the icon you can go into the programs menu, right click on the icon and click 'send to desktop as shortcut' so you have the icon on your desktop again.

As for Nortons/AVG. Nortons is a nasty one to get rid of. I've never used it but would disable it if you can and use AVG.

Try to update AVG automaticly, if that doesn't work either uninstall and reinstall program. Use the AVG uninstaller or you can download updates manually, save them to a folder then point the AVG update to the folder instead of 'update from internet'.

Also check in the 'add/remove programs' to see if the SP2 update is still there. I personally haven't got it installed because of the 'privacy issues' etc, but if you really want to use Windows Defender or the new media player etc you have to have it.

If you used the HP PC system recovery option you have probably restored the computer back to exactly how it was when you purchased it so now you have quite a bit of work ahead of you.

First thing I would do is try out the tasks you couldn't do previously, eg defrag, etc. If all is well then get rid of Nortons and all the programs you don't want via Add/Remove Programs and install the latest version of AVG off their website, not one you downloaded more than a few weeks ago. Download RegSeeker from here (www.snapfiles.com) and give your Registry a clean with it. Do another defrag after this.

Next you have to download and install all the Windows updates again, starting with SP2. Hopefully you are not on dial up....

Thanks to all you guys help I think he/she is getting there Foxy... much better than trying to do a clean install of Windows without the original XP CD. Heck, if they've still got most of their files and can reinstall programs that's progress :D

I have to say Dunno, for someone who 'doesn't know much about computers' you've done pretty good

510821 2006-12-31 03:42:00 Hi short,

Um Office is still there, I will need to download AVG again, defrag worked and started running, and SP2 is gone, can I download the other updates from windows just not SP2, I only wanted windows defender to help me fix the problem which seems to have been fixed by system recovery.
Thank you so so so much for your help I could not have done it without you and speedy and foxy, you guys need a medal

510822 2006-12-31 03:43:00 I also another problem I have an HP_recovery disk which only currently has 13% free space, and to defrag it it requires 15% of free space, how do i do this as i am not allowed to delete or alter files in this drive dunno (1572)
510823 2006-12-31 03:52:00 Great! Sounds like you're up and running again. Follow Foxy's advice and clean out the registry once you've uninstalled/reinstalled any programs you want and defrag as well (I usually do a drefrag about once a month).

I believe that if you do an update from the M/soft web site you have to get the whole SP2 update (not just say SP1). It's not a big issue and you're probably best to download SP2... it's just that it will want to 'phone home' regulary to make sure your copy of Windows is genuine.

As for the HP recovery disc... is this part of 'C' drive? or is it listed separately to 'C' drive when you look at the defrag window? If it's seperate you should be able to chose to just defrag C drive and leave the recovery disc alone.
