511588 2007-01-02 03:24:00 OK, well if u brought this system, I would try and find out how to restore it back to its original state. When u reboot, it may show on the screen what key/s to press to bring up the restore partition...how to restore it to its original state.

Only thing is, if u find it / use it, you may have to reinstall the updates. Depending on how far back the restore goes back to.

The key maybe F1/F2/F10 or F12.

511589 2007-01-03 20:51:00 If this issue is what I think, ie an infinite loop while trying to use the update site, it might be quite a prevalent issue . I have 2 relatively vanilla XP Home machines which I have tried to run the Windows update from the Programme menu . Both say:-

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer . To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

in registering the check of Active X controls blinks on screen and then it settles into asking if the express or custom selection is required . Selecting express it checks for suitable update and then locks into the loop at the 'files required . . . . . are no longer registered or installed . One can go around this loop endlessly . . . if you have time to be entertained by Microsoft .

There are few poorly designed installations systems as bad as MS (improved untill this little glitch, they now need less 'tending' to do the job but still have tendencies to nag and not want to be left to get on with it! . Only Adobe comes close!

No clear help exists (again not a surprise) . Any ideas out there?

511590 2007-01-04 09:02:00 FINALLY GOT IT

Ok, fist try registering MSXML3.dll

ie start/run regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

This seems simple but should fix the problem. Let me know if it does as if it doesn't i have a longer solution. But try this first.

511591 2007-01-05 02:06:00 Re-registering msxml3 . dll as above (found independently via a news broadcast in Mid December 2006, NOT on MS Help!) did work for me too .
Go to run, type in regsvr32 msxml3 . dll . You may be best to reboot at this point .

Then start up Update and it should sort itself out . Piy MS doesn't publish this anywhere that I could see!
