I think you can download the SP2 update from other sites or M/soft update direct:

update.microsoft.com

Well, it looks like Speedy didn't pick anything up in the Hijack log.

You can download SP2 from other sites, just google it I think, but if you feel it's not going to make a difference then my only suggestion is a repair/reinstall of XP

PS. in a scale of agravation I'd try a download of SP2 over a repair install any day!

511557 2007-01-01 01:03:00 download and run a ram test and a hdd test (seagate 'seatools' will do this - if you dont got a seagate then check the makers site they all have diagnostic testers for free download) for ram test i'd suggest windiag (microsoft) or memtest.....\

also dig out your xp cd and stuff it in then clik start/run and type in

sfc /scannow

then tap enter

also go into 'my computer' right clik on c: then clik properties then clik tools then clik 'error checking' and tick both boxes.......if it says it cant do it just now and would you like to schedule a check at boot time say yes

511558 2007-01-01 01:04:00 It would be worthwhile running System File Checker to check for and replace any possibly corrupted system files; type sfc /scannow in the Run box'

511559 2007-01-01 01:09:00 The log seems to look ok, BUT run HJT again tick these entries and tick fix checked. Close browser/s.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

O23 - Service: hpdj - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\hpdj.exe (file missing) - I dont know why this is running from a temp folder.

If the system restore is corrupt, I don't think you've got much choice but to either go to the link I gave, or do a system repair, whatever it is.

I would also install some kind of firewall.

Do a scan with Spybot (www.spybot.info) as well. Download the detection updates from this site as well.
