| 511487 | 2007-01-01 03:11:00 | Hi All and Happy New Year. I have 2 XP machines, 1 that I want to use just as a back up drive. They both have burners drives so I could transfer by DVD/CD but that would seem cumbersome. What I would like to do is to cable one machine to the other and send files though a network. Question is what sort of cables do I need and do I need any special programs apart from what comes built into Win XP. Any other issues that I need to know about. I want to keep this simple but the files I want to transfer are video files so it would need a reasonable speed. Thanks for any help Paul |

Using either Ethernet, or wireless, and if by Ethernet. It depends on whether both of your network cards are 10/100. Or 10/100/1000. But the speed is pretty reasonable, with either 10/100 or Gigabit. And if u have Gigabit lans, you'll also need a Gigabit hub, if u have a hub to get Gigabit speed. |

One port has a digram of 3 connected monitors near it. If I have LAN ports does that mean that there will be network card behind each one ? Paul |

All u need is the Ethernet cable, a crossover cable, or an Ethernet hub to connect the 2. Then after that, all u have to do is enter ip addresses on both, and share a folder, to connect the 2. And configure any firewalls, if any are installed. Once the 2 are connected, it'll tell u on the taskbar what they're connected at (either 10/100, or 1GB (for Gigabit network cards). You won't notice that much of a diff with 10/100 or GB network cards. When u transfer files between the 2. |
