511544 2006-12-31 23:27:00 When i try and enter the "system" icon in control panel i get the error

An exception occurred while trying to run “C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL “C:\WINDOWS\system32.cpl”,System”

Also i cannot get onto the windows update site. The site freezes, sometimes I will get to the page and it will start downloading and registering new updating software but then i get an error also. If i click on the automatic updates icon in control panel i get the error message

An exception occurred while trying to run “C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL “C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaucpll.cpl”,Automatic Updates.

I am running XP Pro SP2. Can anyone please help, i am getting rather frustrated.

511545 2007-01-01 00:09:00 Have you tried a quick system restore?... say to a couple of days ago before you started having the problem.

Get to system restore from start> all programs> go to top of list and click accesories> system tools then down to click system restore.

511546 2007-01-01 00:13:00 Yes have tried system restore. All my restore points seem to be corrupt. Looks like it is going fine and then says, restoration incomplete etc. mastamike2 (11687)
511547 2007-01-01 00:18:00 Yes have tried system restore. All my restore points seem to be corrupt. Looks like it is going fine and then says, restoration incomplete etc.

It's not looking good then, any idea what you did/were doing when it went pear shaped, or did you just wake up in morning and it was bad?

If it was me I'd be looking at doing a repair install of XP, but if you try that make sure you back up all your files etc. It is supposed to save them, but you never know with Windows (it will likely save all your settings but get rid of some programs that you installed too).

511548 2007-01-01 00:22:00 I don't know what has happened. Pretty much woke up and it was like this. Other wierd things happening too ie my sound won't work? It will make system sounds but cant play any music etc. Very strange. mastamike2 (11687)
511549 2007-01-01 00:24:00 Try re service packing the system, by running the sp2 update again to see if that fixes any issues. SolMiester (139)
511550 2007-01-01 00:29:00 Sorry if this is a stupid question but How do i do the update when i cannot get to the update site? mastamike2 (11687)
511551 2007-01-01 00:33:00 Have you got the SP2 install file on your pc somewhere?, use that the re-install the service pack to correct any overwritten files.

If you havent got it, download from microsoft, com
www.microsoft.com

511552 2007-01-01 00:33:00 See if the steps here (www.bleepingcomputer.com) work

For the system restore part.

Get hijackthis as well (www.merijn.org)

Unzip it FIRST, then run it click on scan and save a log. Then copy and paste the log it creates back here. We'll see whats in it.
