| 1410306 | 2015-10-21 23:26:00 | Trying to fix an IGFX problem on my Win7pro64 I thought it might be caused by Windows updates on the 15th . So I did a Restore to the 14th . Unfortunately it failed to reboot . I tried all the 'repair' options but the only thing that worked was a system image restore with format . When I started I thought I was doing a simple Restore which could be reversed so I hadn't saved my data on C: So my first question is what went wrong and is this a common occurrence using Restore? Windows added 9 files on the 15th . The restore removed 8 of them in theory, but not KB . . . 664 which does the Win10 nagging I believe . While I was trying the Repair options I got a very basic Windows screen and managed to copy my data files off C: Whew! My second question is where did this installation come from? Was it on the Repair Boot Disc? Could it have been (part of) the proper installation? (Device Manager was a sea of yellow) The third possibility is that it was the Windows installation for my previous MB, which is still sitting in the machine on an old 120 GB SSD . That would account for the yellow exclamation marks . If this is correct, either I could leave it there in case I need to do the same thing in future OR I could remove it and maybe the boot process would find the correct installation . Which would you advise? |

| 1410307 | 2015-10-22 03:47:00 | So my first question is what went wrong and is this a common occurrence using Restore Anything could have gone wrong. System Restore is not foolproof. It can and does fail for any number of reasons. I've lost count of the number of times Its been run, then comes up with an error saying its failed and nothing was changed, reboot - and something was telling porkies - as it had worked. Other part to your post -- I'd either restore the PC back from a backup image ( assuming you have one) or start again from a fresh install. Doesn't matter how many "fixes or commands" are run through, or reloading of drivers, software, sometimes if the OS is damaged its damaged and will never be the same. The other option if it boots is do a repair install, but again may not be 100% right. |

If you redirect your 'My Documents' folder to another folder on another drive/partition you will always have an up to date duplicate of the 'My Documents Folder'. I avoid using system restore because it can replace Malware & Virae which had since been removed. Much better to just restore from a recent system Image (Acronis, Backupper etc) | mzee (3324) | ||
