| 1409763 | 2015-10-13 04:31:00 | Ok I had a lovely external hard drive.....with all my photos on it and work stuff................ was working fine about a week ago.......... I use it most weeks to back up my work stuff and add valuable photos at times just in case. Most of it is on other machines.......... but this was all collated and in one spot, with some extra stuff on it. no lights go when plugged in and pcs dont see it. Remind me please is it possible to rescue any of it? I think we did that last time of a WD one. 2 PCs worth of bits, and multiple phone and camera photos.... probably got everything already on it, but may mean hours of traisping through masses of folders. and what to replace this Ex HD with now? its 1TB size I think. beetle :) |

Depending on how the External HDD is constructed, you can simply disassemble it, and unplug the HDD from the Circuit board and you have a perfectly fine SATA HDD, throw it into another empty case and away you go. Other times the actual Circuit Board for the External HDD is all part of the HDD, this is more difficult as it wont have SATA connections |

If that does not work, put it in the computer and see if it gets detected. Usually best to run it in a Live environment with hard drive tools, incase it needs repairs or recovery. Failing that, it maybe time to get a hard drive specialist to recover it. Cheers, KK |

The disk itself was perfectly alright after extracting it from the case. Hopefully this may turn out to be the case with you. |

| 1409771 | 2015-10-13 08:05:00 | I dont have another cable that has the same fitting...... i have lots of usb.... but this cable has a different fitting on the end..... so im kinda stuck, I tried different pc's, but came unstuck on the cable idea. the link shows a picture of the cable which is wrapped around the drive, with a dent like bit in it......... I have no others like that. |

| 1409772 | 2015-10-13 08:13:00 | It's a USB 3 cable with Micro USB3-B plug. Different to USB 2 because of the higher speed and extra power capability. You can get new ones in most shops. I would try that first, as the cable may have broken. You could also inspect the socket on the drive enclosure for broken or bent pins, that would also do it. |
