1402343 2015-06-11 04:45:00 , $120 a week rent. She's on $243.85 a week.

I presume the $243 is on top of the $120 rent?

Surely it's not possible to live on $124 a week. The average house uses 8000 units of electricity per year which is $40 a week (@25c a unit). That wouldn't leave much for phone, petrol, and whatever else you need to stay alive. (food, perhaps)

Not far from us are some social housing flats that are built next to a creek and lose the sun at midday. There's a huge amount of condensation on the windows and I often think the people would benefit from proper curtains and ventilation

Trouble is, curtains would cost $100. They don't have that to spare - and anyway they might have to shift flats. Letting valuable heat out is a disincentive to opening the windows. Complaints from families having to endure the icy blast would be another disincentive

are you sure....seems a bit low...

from a while back, new curtains for a ministers apartment, paid for by you & me (I'll never forget )
"Ms Bunkle, who owns a small Thorndon residence close to Parliament that she is renting out, said she was offered the rent-free apartment by Ministerial Services.
She said she would be keeping a closer eye on spending by Ministerial Services, after learning $5600 had been spent on new hemp curtains.."

1402345 2015-06-11 05:28:00 And hemp is only decorative!

I agree $5000 is nearer the mark for you and me.

For the people down the road, a few metres of thermal lining, a stapler or drawing pins, some string to tie it back for daylight, is more appropriate. It would cost about $100. It's what I would do in their circumstances if I had $100 to spare

They already have home made "curtains" - sheets and light-weight blankets half draped here and there

1402346 2015-06-11 06:51:00 I caught Pneumonia last year while I was in Hospital for surgery. It was dry and warm. Pneumonia is not caused by cold damp conditions, it is a bug like the flu or a cold. I am getting increasingly tired of people expecting everyone to supply them with the necessities of living. If you are not satisfied with your living conditions, get off your butt and do something about it.

1402347 2015-06-11 06:52:00 My wife and I have worked all our lives, paid taxes, and have never had a Government funded handout.

Are we the idiots?? :(

Are we now expected to subsidise those lazy bastards who won't get off their arses and do an honest day's work?

No.
Because she is on HNZ housing, she doesn't qualify for any accommodation supplements...which wouldn't be much more than about $45 anyway...
Yep....can't live on it....that's why she was at Budgeting in the first place...
