2015-10-21 11:51:00 | Until someone tops the Macbook Pro as an all-round device I'm unlikely to buy anything else. So I'd have to say Apple. If I had to pick a windows laptop it'd probably be Asus. I used to like Lenovo laptops a lot (The Yoga series looked awesome) but I've gone off them a bit after the whole rootkit thing.

The problem with this question, is that unless the person has experience of 100's of laptops, you really arnt going to get a good answer. If someone is happy with all the laptops they bought, it might be ONLY because that person spent the extra $$$ and got pro level lappies. That doesnt mean todays cheapies will be any good. & vice versa example: we sell alot of HP's.I think they are good. My mother bought the cheapest HP she could find (from a toaster shop) , it was rubbish (barely usable) So HP are both excellent & rubbish. Brand means nothing. example : I sold one particular customer a Tosh Sat. He said it was rubbish and wasnt happy . 3 years later he's saying its one of the best he's ever had. Go figure . So, pick the lappy with the longest warranty & best spec. Brand doesnt mean that much any more (if you stick with known brands) the parts are all made by other companies anyway, they then get the brand name slapped on it after assembly. |

2015-10-22 00:12:00 | Yes, all brand has its lemons including Apple. Two friends bought a MacBook Air (2 years ago) and both had hardware issues within a month. I loved the Asus Zenbook I bought about two years ago, but it developed charging problem within 6 months and got repaired twice over a period of 3 months for free under warranty, the warranty process was very good and painless. Friend who has got it never had any other problem with it since. The new ones are apparently very good, been told by one source that they only had 1 warranty issue with over 100+ sold. www.notebookcheck.net Years ago, I have had some very bad experiences with HP Presario range and was told by a HP service agent that he would never buy one. The HP Pavalion range are not bad. The HP Envy and Spectre range are excellent, in fact the SpectreX360 has one of the best build quality I have seen, up there with the MacBookPro if not better, and it's far more versatile with the touch screen that folds back into a tablet like the Lenovo Yoga. www.cnet.com Current ones in the big box store are end of line models with 5th Gen Core processors. Not sure when the 6th Gen ones are out yet. The Microsoft Surface Pro3 is excellent but pricey option, with the Keyboard Cover and Dock, you get a tablet, laptop and desktop in one. They were being made fun of and called "Toaster Fridge (www.winbeta.org)" earlier on but looks like everyone including the name caller is also making one now (iPad Pro). It has turned around a $900 million write off from SurfacePro2 days to a $1.1 Billion revenue for the Surface Pro 3 at the beginning of 2015. There are a few known issues with Surface Pro 3 but not deal breakers though. The keys on the keyboard cover are not the best and the touch pad is tiny. You can however use a proper keyboard and mouse when docked at a desk and of course the touch screen as well. Core i5 and i7 range does has fan noise issues when it is working hard. However, these appear to be mostly fixed in the Surface Pro 4, the new keyboard cover has excellent key travel, a new much bigger touch pad and fingerprint reader for quick log in and it works with SurfacePro3 as well. SP4 has Skylake 6th Gen CPU, so it should run a lot cooler and quieter. www.youtube.com www.youtube.com www.pcworld.com The Microsoft SurfaceBook will be my next ultimate laptop though but it's sold out in less than 5 days of pre-order. It also cost as much or more than an MacBookPro with the all decked out model. www.youtube.com money.cnn.com But if you take into consideration of the additional features, it is a certainly a good alternative ... www.trustedreviews.com * Convertible - Tablet/Laptop * Thin and light - magnesium body that weighs in at 726g (1.52kg with keyboard) * 10 point multi touch screen * Come with Stylus that has an "eraser" * 13.5" 3000 x 2000, 267 ppi Display * Nvidia GeForce GPU with GDDR5 memory in the keyboard base * Dual Cameras (5.0MP front and 8.0MP rear), Dual Microphones

2015-10-22 02:16:00 | I should mention that both my Asus lappies had premature battery failure. The first was replaced under warranty; the second was out of warranty so had to pay for the replacement myself - was inexpensive at less-than $100 from a great outfit in Chch - can't recall their name. | Greg (193) | |
2015-10-22 05:03:00 | As others have said, I have a HP mini110 apart from the battery not charging any-more (its 7 years old) it still runs fine on mains. i did upgrade it to 2Gb RAM and from Win7 starter to Win10, still chugging along. Getting a tiny bit slow now but for taking away when I need to its fine still. | gary67 (56) | |

2015-10-22 07:17:00 | Lenovo Superfish issue wasn't on the ThinkPad line BTW Check out the new Microsoft Surface Book The Surface Book looks like a cool device (the 3:2 aspect ratio is awesome) for sure but isn't even close to price competitive with the Macbook Pro and doesn't really offer me anything valuable enough to justify the price difference.
