1402323 2015-06-10 03:42:00 I don't intend pointing the finger at any political party, their agent or any particular politician.

Electricity is so darned expensive and unless the home is well built, maintained and insulated, the cost of heating it by that method can be diabolical. At least remove the GST from it over the colder months.
When I grew up we lived in a wooden house at the foot of the Southern Alps but we had big fires to keep us warm. Although we mostly played outside. We were far from rich but we were well fed and clothed; definitely no designer labels for kids back then. My parents valued education. The whole structure of society has changed. There were no Loan Sharks, that I was aware of and I guess we just lived within our means. One of the main differences between then and now is that almost every family had at least one working member.

Having been secretary of a Family Budgeting and Advisory Service, a voluntary organisation, I do know that not all of those who asked for help were totally irresponsible. Being from the dinosaur age, that was before the credit card era. Although we did have to keep a very firm eye on some of the family cheque books.

I do know that no child is responsible for those who have the day to day task of taking care of them.

1402324 2015-06-10 03:50:00 So, the higher percentage of winter deaths 40 years ago was because they could afford to heat their homes back then?

Or was it because the same houses were better built in that era?

Damn, none of this makes sense, I'm going to blame global warming.

No , but if we have a death of a very sick man, or a very sick kiddie, lets not all jump on the bandwagon and blame all the houses. Perhaps they should have been in hospital, as they may have been 30 years ago.
I'd be the first to admit that I dont see how even those on average(ie median) wages can afford Ak rents, but put in a WOF for home & you'll have more living in cars , living under bridges & living in garages.
The state does however need to sort out its own houses, and schools, before making a new rule for everyone.

Perhaps Ak needs to get real & allow multi story high rise low cost apartments to be build where ever they are needed. Not try and build one state house here, one state house there.

I have to agree.
Husband has had pneumonia, we are pretty sure he caught it from a friend of his that had it - neither the friend nor us at the time had a cold or damp house.
It is a bacterial infection and contagious.

His last illness, the lung doc says we will never know what he had originally(he thought is was pneumonia again) but he'd then got a secondary infection - pseudomonas.

"Emma-Lita died from a brain haemorrhage resulting from a clot." If you read the report she had an abcess formed which got into the bloodstream.

Likewise husband...by the time the GP stop pissing around for months and sent him to the lung doc, she was worried he had abscesses too and that may have required a nasty, dangerous operation.
Fortunately most of it cleared up. Most.

Now also in that report seems to me this girls GP pissed around a bit too. She had rather minor antibiotics for pneumonia, no proper tests were done and she got worse.

Yes it's sad.
Yes houses are often cold and/or damp.

But to blame the house for her? It's media harping, to push the agenda of WOFs for houses.

My neighbours have had some living in the carport for quite some time. Pretty damn cold. No-one is sick, no-one is dead.
On the other hand - our well insulated - extremely warm house gives my husband infections?

I think not.....today for instance with no heating on it's 25 in my lounge, it's so damn hot I have opened up the ranchslider.

First thing this morning when we got up and before sun or heating was applied, it was 15.
Pretty good really.....we'd have 7 down Sth before any heating....

Yes houses should be maintained to a certain standard....that is not run down hovels.
Should owners have to provide heaters though? I don't think so, the family had one, they didn't use it.

1402330 2015-06-10 06:59:00 Let’s “Cut to the Chase on this one”.

Two people “died” and thousands lived in “State Houses”.

The problem was “HERE” not Government.

The admission and apology confirms that yet again a Government Department has screwed up. But take comfort, "Government Departments" have been “Screwing Up” since before I was born.

My comment to KarameaDave was in reference to his pathetic attempt at trying to score a point.

I had already done so :)

1402332 2015-06-10 08:25:00 If they dont like the state houses and cant afford to heat and ventilate them causing mould go live in a private rental at full market rate. Dont be obese, smoke, have heart problems, 6 kids, no job and make it the governments problem. prefect (6291)
