| 1402315 | 2015-06-10 02:25:00 | Hero of the week goes to Nick Smith ....and I hate to say that. For having the balls to speak some truth, knowing the backlash it will cause for having the balls not to repeat some newsbites that have no basis in ACTUAL facts but wait, theres more..it seems for we all know that being cold or being in a damp house is a sure killer . Thats why Im writing this from beyond the grave as my house is cold & damp. God help those in the SI, as its so cold down there compared to Ak, how could anyone possibly survive. I think we need to step back & think over the reality of things. Cold house, well Isnt that what blankets & jumpers are for ? Am I missing something here. How did people survive when those houses were built 30-40 years ago. Damp house, opening windows during the day & digging an open drain around the house really helps. Labor had how many years in office to do something, yet didnt. Lets blame them instead. Or did this issue not exist 10 years ago? |

| 1402317 | 2015-06-10 03:03:00 | 100,000 houses where there is no under floor or under roof cavity to insulate, need to know who they all belong to, state or parasite renters' ???. | Lurking (218) | ||
| 1402318 | 2015-06-10 03:03:00 | Hero of the week goes to Nick Smith .... Gimme a break! Low wage Workers have been screwed to the limit, rents are eating up a huge proportion of their incomes, and they can't save to buy a home of their own, that's the exclusive domain of either the cash loaded immigrants or the well-off these days. Granted many (probably most) low income earners are not good at budgeting, but they also get screwed by a Loan Shark 'industry' that the Government does nothing to restrain. Meanwhile, many current politicians own multiple properties and 'rack rent' (the US interpretation, not the UK). Free firewood is abundant during the summer months, pallets are left in their hundreds on the roadside for free collection and we have not bought any fuel other than fire lighters for many years, but few seem to take advantage of that resource until winter, while we collect them in summer when the wood is dry and nobody seems to want it. However, that is a relatively recent resource. When our Local Council trims trees, they grind up all of the wood (hopefully for mulch, but more likely for landfill) so much of that potential source no longer exists either. New Zealand needs both a culture and a Government that between them care more about our less fortunate people and create opportunities to encourage them to live their lives with dignity and in good health. There will always be an underbelly that neither cares about its responsibilities, nor is interested in improving its lot, but at the present time the underbelly is climbing pretty close to the throat. You are right about a couple of things...This is something that both the major parties are responsible for. However National are the ones who can do something about it now...they have stood by and watched our society as a whole turn into a me first, second and third society. As someone who currently resides in Dunedin and who can not afford to run a heater, blankets and jerseys go only so far....then the arthritis kicks in so that you can not pick up the blankets etc.The price of power is way Too Expensive....various Governments have used it as a way of taxation by stealth. We were promised cheaper power.... Thirty or forty years ago they could afford to switch on the heater... now they can't,so you can insulate all you bloody like, but if there is no heat to capture it remains bloody cold as Nick Smith's heart... |

| 1402322 | 2015-06-10 03:41:00 | My initial thoughts are that if enforced insulation of rentals etc. occurs, I may not be able to afford renting anymore, without sacrificing savings. I live in Ngaio, Wellington, where it was just reported the local school is having issues with mould. It doesn't help that we're on the side of a hill, so sunlight doesn't hit half the day, or less if the neighbour has trees.... |
