512828 2007-01-05 05:57:00 Just heading back on topic.... what are your requirements regarding things like:

-Screen size
-Battery life

The reason I ask is that I recently bought a Dell laptop (there is a thread on this forum), for just under $2500 which is quite high-speced (Core2Duo, 2gb RAM, 2 high-capacity batteries = 16hrs life total). You could get one under $2000 easily with lower specs, which would easily fulfill your criteria (with the exception of the Integrated Graphics).

Otherwise, stores like Noel Leeming and Harvey Norman have laptops under $2000 which fulfill all of your criteria (including having discrete graphics).

512829 2007-01-05 06:10:00 Screen - 14" +
Battery - Not to fussed, as long as i can get 3-5 hours of moderate usage i should be fine( im not going to take it to lectures or anything, and usage in the library/halls will probably be with AC)

Well that puts any mac thats in your reach out. I would still be looking for core2duo as a processor.
The Dell inspiron 640 look good value, they are all vista read, not sure about premium ready though

512831 2007-01-05 06:41:00 With sufficient RAM, the 640m (my laptop) is able to run Vista with the Aero glass GUI.

I would recommend you have a look around local stores. Just be aware that many laptops have shocking battery lives (less than 2hrs is very common).

512832 2007-01-05 06:53:00 MacBook is Core2Duo and secure out of the box but screen size is 13" which could be a bummer. Same chip speed as PCs and takes up to 2GB of RAM. It is also Leopard ready without having to buy a new machine. Just depends if you want to go under 14" monitor.

If your in Harvey Normans or Noel Leemings go and have a play on a PC lap top and a MacBook and compare all the features that the respective laptops ship with to see what you get for your money. Then if you would still prefer a "Vista ready" PC laptop you can go and buy one. Don't forget they give you the viruses for FREE ;)

512835 2007-01-05 07:35:00 In terms of a windows based notebook, this one looks nice
h10010.www1.hp.com

(its $400 off atm), the one thing is its got a smaller screen, but that aside it has a nice processor and 1gig of ram.

What do you ppl think?
