512795 2007-01-05 05:45:00 According to this site (www.annoyances.org) an update can cause this error. Or downloading Tuneup 2004 fixes this prob. Speedy Gonzales (78)
512796 2007-01-05 10:55:00 Tried tune-up - doesn't cure it.

Run check disk and found lots of bad clusters, after repair, still very sick, some drivers missing, etc, keyboad .. etc. Put in a known to be good HDD, reinstall OS, same problem.

I think time's up for this machine; not worth the time and money trying to cure it. It is quite an old machine, anyway. -- about 4 years old :badpc:

512797 2007-01-05 12:15:00 Don't give up yet m8, there's still things to try.

Ram was sugested, have you tried that? Swap them, test them, one at a time, different order in the slots....

Have you tried linux? If not, try the puppy (www.puppylinux.org), its made for older hardware.

512798 2007-01-05 19:55:00 Unfortunately, haven't got a stick of RAM to swap.

I think the MB itself has got problem, too. On few occasions, the keyboard just failed to function after installing the sound driver. Just tried to reload the OS again this morning and after installing the audio driver, the keyboard stops working and it happened 2 times yesterday. Even a system restore will not bring it back to live. Probably this is a very good excuse (?) for a new machine (for the new year) ?????????

512799 2007-01-05 20:25:00 I think it's your Hard disk. It may not be, but I have seen that before.

Eventually the problem won't be cured by windows, and you'll get an error before you get to windows about missing registry files.

Go to recovery console (boot off your windows CD and press R to enter recovery console when prompted to do so) and run chkdsk /r to scan and recover bad sectors. If it finds and repairs some, then consider a new disk.

512800 2007-01-05 21:08:00 gidday,

I experienced this a few weeks ago, it would show the registry warning,
after a restart, over time things got worse, with the computer restarting
without prompting, unitil it finally crashed.

Two hardware faults where found, a faulty ram stick, and a faulty power pack.

cheers,

Robby

But I have swapped the HDD with a good one (known to be) and the problem doesn't go away. It pops up immediatly after the installation completes. :badpc:

512802 2007-01-06 00:55:00 mmm...very frustrating indeed.

You must be getting very tired of the win install process by now and the whole boot, reboot stuff.

Robby's post sounds promising...have you taken any steps in that direction yet?

You could still try linux. At least that will rule out the os as a candidate.

Perhaps it's time to unleash the dogs of war ...lol...well it's a puppy (www.puppylinux.org) actually but don't let that fool you, it has one hell of a bite! ;)

512803 2007-01-06 01:10:00 download and run a ram diagnostic program such as this one I find very good:

oca.microsoft.com

512804 2007-01-06 23:26:00 Culprit found and TERMINATED!

It's the USB2 PCI card that's driving me crazy! Removed it and everything's fine!;) ;)

But it has been there for months already:confused:
