512413 2007-01-03 21:37:00 I only suggested it because she prevously/currently has a Mac. If she was transfering from Win95 or 3.0 to XP I wouldn't have suggested it. winmacguy (3367)
512414 2007-01-03 21:53:00 What about pursuing the ethernet connection option?

Cheers

That would work, she would need to set up a share folder on the PC since OS9 uses Apple talk rather than TCP/IP

512416 2007-01-03 22:05:00 Macvangelism strikes again. :waughh:

Why would you offer irrelevant (and expensive) advice like that when the original post makes it quite clear she has a PC now?

Correct. As much as she loves her Mac :illogical , it will definitely be retired and WinXP will take over. BTW, she has little $$ to spend on computers, even $50 is a lot for her.

OK so what does this mean exactly? If I have to buy a special ethernet cable then this will not be an option. I do have a cable (ethernet?) that connects my wife's laptop to the broadband router next to my desktop - would this work? But my experience of :horrified networking :annoyed: computers tells me that this option may be too complicated.

Only illogical to someone who has never used one, but yes definitely in need of being retired.
which model is it do you know?

I assume that she is a student? I wish her luck with her studies.
MS office works on both PC and Mac.
What apps does she use?

She will no longer be virus free (sad) without assisance.

Yes it just means that she has ethernet and that she can/should be able to hook her Mac up to the network although I would suggest either checking with Maccrazy(PM) who may be more capable than me or giving Magnum Mac a call since they should have more experince than me. Apple uses Apple talk on systems OS9 and earlier which is a bit fiddly with PC networks but not impossible hence why they changed to TCP/IP (standard networking protocols) with OS X

Magnum Mac should be able to help you for free with any luck.

Mac networking is generally much easier than PC networking.

512420 2007-01-03 22:36:00 Have done similar stuff at work before with a PC tech and Mac admin on hand since most MS techies don't compute well with fruit but lots of Mac admins know a bit about Windows. winmacguy (3367)
