512460 2007-01-03 19:33:00 Hi all.

I'm thinking of buying a 17" LCD monitor in the very near future. I see that basic Polyview and ChiMei models are available for not much more than $300, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these brands. Are they okay, or would I be better to spend the extra $30 or so to get a Philips or Viewsonic model?

Any advice appreciated.

512461 2007-01-03 22:01:00 Both Philips and Viewsonic are good brands - don't know much about the other two you mention. Probably worth spending the extra $30, IMHO.

But no matter what you end up buying, make sure you get a "No Dead Pixels" warranty...

Yea, after I hit the send button, I sort of realised that $30 is a pretty small price to pay if it gives me a bit of extra piece of mind.

No, it will be connected to a Mac Mini which will be used mainly for Internet browsing, storing photos and playing music.

Nothing too serious.

In that case pretty much any sort of monitor that fits your budget. How long have you had your Mac?
10.3 or 10.4?

Internet browsing, storing photos and playing music.

Making movies
iLife in general
MS office
Editing Digital video
Making music
not worrying about viruses or hacking.

Enjoy :)

I haven't actually bought it yet! I'm intending to buy in the next couple of weeks, unless a new Mini gets announced in San Francisco next week, in which case I might hold off a bit longer. I used Macs for years and years but have been unfortunate enough to be stuck with a PC for the last six months, so it will be good to go back to the Mac platform.
