| 512403 | 2007-01-03 11:07:00 | Is it possible to transfer data from a Mac to a PC ? My friend has an old Mac, about 8 yrs old or so, with OS9 (updated). She now has a PC with WinXP Pro and would like her email and other data transferred over. The Mac has no CD writer, only a floppy drive. My guess is that simple text and perhaps RTF files can be transferred, but the email (address book and emails) will be a problem unless I can convert them to simple text or upload them to a virtual email account (GMail or whatever) and then insert the data into the PC's Thunderbird. If there is a magic program that would swap the data, let me know but I don't have my hopes up too high. |

Generally shifting stuff from one to the other and back again is pretty easy and straight forward. Generally the only thing Windows XP does better than OS X is gaming (and it does that very well) It sounds like your friends Mac predates Steve Jobs return to Apple ( He dumped the floppy drive) |

| 512408 | 2007-01-03 18:21:00 | Yes she is using Mac email. What is CSV ? She won't be using Mac Mail on OS 9 It comes with OS X Most likely it is OE Eudora or Netscape mail. |

| 512409 | 2007-01-03 18:31:00 | I have no problems navigating my bosses system (XP) from my Mac (Tiger) during the day and opening and saving files from his machine to mine and vice versa. Bit harder to do on OS9 though. | winmacguy (3367) | ||
| 512410 | 2007-01-03 19:25:00 | Safari and Winmacguy - she could be using Eudora or Netscape - I did not bother to look and assumed an old Mac would only have Mac mail. She plans to retire her old Mac so OS X is a no go and I am not even sure if the old specs would handle it. Zqwerty - hope it does have a USB as floppies will be a pain. |

| 512411 | 2007-01-03 19:50:00 | SteveL Her old machine specs probably won't handle it. I am guessing she is possibly using an old PowerBook 3400, No USB ports(introduced in 1997!) A G3 would handle OS X although it would run fairly slowly. If she can afford it it would be beneficial to get rid of the old Powerbook and replace it with a new Intel MacBook since XP is about to be replaced with Vista. The only other thing I can think of would be to take her old Mac into Magnum Mac and see if they could help. She could check on Trade me for a newer 2nd hand MacBook. |

Buying another Mac is not a helpful solution, suggesting seeking assistance from Magnum Mac was, (credit where credit's due). What about pursuing the ethernet connection option? Cheers Billy 8-{) |
