513568 2007-01-07 07:32:00 I am making a compilation of home videos for my sisters 21st. I have captured the videos to mpg format, and now I need to edit them. What are the best video editing tools to do this? I need to cut scenes out and join them together, and I also wish to run a filter over the sound to remove a high pitched whine that's on the videos.
I've tried using VirtualDub for the sound, but I can't save the video as direct source, so it's trying to output it as an uncompressed avi, ending up being huge and laggy as (I'm running on a low specced computer).

If anyone has any suggestions it will be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Roddy

513569 2007-01-07 07:36:00 Any Ulead program will do this, Nerovision (part of Nero), altho all the plugins aren't free.

A program may have come with your DVD burner for this as well.

How low spec are we talking about??

513570 2007-01-07 07:40:00 Depends on your budget. My suggestion would be Adobe Premier Elements which is the basic version (cheaper) of Adobe Premier. It caters for both USB 2.0 and Firewire drives which are essential for hi speed hi volume file transfer. It is reasonably easy to use and is available for about $200 or just under I think. It will allow you to do the full time line cut/edit/import/music tracks etc. You could probably try a few free bee ones out there but I think that if you want decent video editing software you have to pay for it. Adobe also covers all video import and export formats. You can get Adobe Premier Elements from Noel Leeming stores.

One suggestion though. Make sure that as well as a fast processor you also have a minimum of 1GB of RAM on your machine. Anything under that and your editing will take a while. Anything over that would just be a bonus.

513571 2007-01-07 07:46:00 Yeah I'm not too keen to be spending any money at all. I prob should have upgraded the machine, but couldn't be bothered. It's a 2.4GHz Celeron, but the killer is that it's running 256MB RAM.

Doesn't have a DVD drive.

Mostly after software to split the audio off a .mpg, and then put it back on at this stage. Will probably be doing most of the cutting etc with windows movie maker or something.

Well I am not sure of the cost of Ulead and I can't vouch for using any of the free stuff for PCs since I have done most of my video editing previously in iMovie but I'd go with Speedy's suggestion and your right, 256MB of RAM will be a killer.

513574 2007-01-07 08:02:00 Do u have a DVD burner?

If not, what you're burning may not fit on a blank cd.

I don't think Moviemaker can load or edit files other than WMV the format it saves in.

256mb of ram is a killer, but I managed to edit all the familys home movies with it, just keep on making coffee.. and that was on a 1ghz G4 imac

Well Ive done photoshop on a G4 with 256MB, good for small files, you just have to wait longer for those in the 40MB plus range. Yay...

More RAM is better tho. :D
