513369 2007-01-07 01:14:00 Hey Peeps :D

I am wanting to setup a server as a personal web and file host, what OS and hardware specs would I need to run it?

I am also wanting to have a web interface accesable by password which shows the status of all PCs on my network (on of offline) and if they are online have an address that can be used to access with RDC. (or possibly even a link that opens RDC?)

And have all printers connecter to the server via USB (and show the on or offline status of them) and have them shared so we can print to them from anywhere on the net, again an address to type in to add the printer and then manually remove it once finished from the external PC (or again possibly a link that adds the printer to the external PCs printers and then automatically removes it once finished, via logout button?)

What do you Peeps think?

Thanks :)

513370 2007-01-07 02:09:00 You mean remote desktop?? Well you'll need XP pro, or whatever OS supports it.

You're pushing it a bit, if u want to show the status of the printers on the site.

There maybe some kind of script for this don't know.

Linux would most probably be better than any version of Windows, it maybe more secure. Networking the printer would be the easiest part.

513371 2007-01-07 02:20:00 Yes, I do. most of the PCs I use have RDC (Remote Desktop Connection)

Do you think? just if they are connected and able to print, that is all I want (for the status)

Ok, any particular distro?

Nope, wouldn't have a clue. I've never used Linux myself.

BUT, before you decide, I would make sure whatever distro of Linux u get (if u use it) that there are drivers for the hardware in the case.

513373 2007-01-07 02:33:00 Sigh... and you are reccomending Linux... :p

Yes, I will. I have tried Linux before and found it hard to use, but I didn't really give it a good go, I know I will be able to use it given I give it a fair go...

:D Well I would try it and buy a copy from DSE, or something. But it's most probably out of date. And stuffed if I'm downloading it on dialup .

513375 2007-01-07 03:24:00 You could use an Xserve set up on a Mac Mini or just a Mac mini running OS X. If you wanted to since you are talking about networking printers to PCs. Xserves have the cheapest of server licensing agreements and are the easiest to set up as well as being able to serve all platforms and they have all the features you are looking for. They are also very suitable for web hosting and are secure much like Linux.

Linux would possibly be the cheapest option overall considering that Linux is pretty much free to install on an existing PC but it is not necessarily the easiest to configure or administer which is its only downside in that situation.

Just a suggestion. :)

And will u be supplying the Mac?

Well as I said the Mac mini would be the easiest to use:
Retail price $1128

But Linux installed on an existing PC would be the cheapest.

And XP Pro would be in the middle for cost and suitablility. But at the bottom of the list in terms of security.
