513295 2007-01-07 00:02:00 I currently have an MX4000 which gets me nowhere with playing new games, doesn't have pixel or vertex shader and the hardware only supports DX 7, although the software does support DX 9. It barely runs CSS or HL2, and even then it's at nearly lowest settings.
What I need is the cheapest agp video card that will run new games at 40fps + on max settings at 1024 x 768, and I won't have to upgrade it in the near future.
I need the cheapest option here, but it must be able to run them without lagging.
But yea just to say again please tell me what the cheapest option is as i'm not loaded with money here....Wish I was :D
Thankyou for any help you can provide

P.S.
Sorry for making another one of these type of threads...

513298 2007-01-07 00:42:00 AGP cards now are more expensive for the same performance than PCI-E cards (atleast that's what I can tell from looking at the online)

Also you did ask for the cheapest card that would run those games smoothly. You could get a cheaper AGP card that would be better than your GeForce 4 MX4000, but it wouldn't run it as smoothly as you wanted. The 7600GT should run it how you like.

513299 2007-01-07 00:46:00 running any modern games at max settings, 40fps you will need to part with a rather large wad of cash. dbs (8785)
513300 2007-01-07 00:51:00 AGP busses come in diferent multipliers and considering that your old video card only runs DirectX 7 is your motherboard an AGP4x? If so your options are very limited. BrotherDragon (10117)

Yea I know I just hate lag.

Oh. Bugger.
Might just stick with the MX for a bit until they come down then.

No, the computers brand new, mother just didn't want to fork out the money for a PCI-E motherboard so the IT guy gave us a AGP one, which is 8x. Just the video cards old.

One other question.
I noticed those DX10 cards are out. The 8800gtx thingys. But there like $1300! Are any DX10 cards going to come out that will be cheaper than those? And will they be in AGP?
Because if the 8*** generation of cards are out will it be a bit silly buying a 7*** generation now?

513302 2007-01-07 01:29:00 Eventually affordable DirectX 10 cards will be around, my guess is in about a year for a $500 card. I'm buying a new tower for Vista and intend to put in a nVidia7600 for approx. $300 and wait for the price on the nVidia8xxx cards to drop. I don't think any DirectX 10 cards will be made for AGP slots but I might be wrong. BrotherDragon (10117)
513303 2007-01-07 01:31:00 I might do the same as you. But buy a PCI-E mobo when the DX10 ones become affordable. Thanks for your help Fishy (10540)

Bad idea of mothers . She effectively bought obsolete technology .
Better to have bought a PCI-E board and some PCI-E card .

Of course there will be affordable DX10 cards soon . Don't forget Vista isn't even released yet (ignore all the pre-release stuff) . The only game built for DX10 so far is Crysis which also isn't out yet and does support DX9 too .

There will be masses of DX10 cards by the time it matters .
In fact the 8800GTX will end up being budget when all the new ones supercede it .
