513306 2007-01-06 23:32:00 Hi Guys,

I have a vfat drive that contains all my game installs and I was running the game Prey when it had a spas and died. When I tried to start it again it compained about default.cfg which I tried to fix by deleting the default.cfg file from the Base directory however it told me it couldn't do it because of read only filesystem.

I checked mtab and it was still mounted as rw.

I mounted the drive by mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/hda2 -o umask=0,exec.

Then the wierd part, I remounted and killed the default.cfg file fine, went to run the game again and it complains about game dynamic library (I did notice the gamex86.dll to be missing) but then when I get back to the desktop it has changed the drive to read only again.

I also had a symlink to the drive from inside my ~/Transgaming_drive folder.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

Cheers,
hamstar

P.S. I swear this game runs better on linux than windows - if you haven't played Prey, get it and play till the end, its the best game I have ever played :D

513307 2007-01-07 01:12:00 Type this command at the CLI:

cat /etc/mtab

You should see your partition in the list. If it says rw after the mount point then the problem is with your Windows emulation. Contact Transgaming support if this is the case.

513308 2007-01-07 02:12:00 Oh ok. Yep it does say that in mtab (tho I just type mount by itself instead of cat). I'll just upgrade to the 5.2.9 engine when I get aroound to it I guess then....

Cheers :)

513309 2007-01-07 10:36:00 Hamstar: You might actually be right, certain games _do_ perform better.

Actually, a lil while ago, nVidia made this cool powerpoint document that shows the results of some benchmarks done with Quake3 in Windows & Linux.. basically in Linux either native or under WINE there was a decent performance increase when compared with windows. Of course I have no idea where this powerpoint has gone, but back then... it was nice to see how good linux could do (About 2 1/2 years back). No doubt a lot would have changed over two years, but my point is its possible, even under Cedega / Wine.. even if it is just in your head! ;)
