513343 2007-01-07 00:58:00 hi all, hope someone can help, my new PC takes ages to boot up, i firstly had linux on it and then tried win Xp but it takes forever to boot (talking like 2hours here!!!) so i got rid of linux thinking that may be the problem, but its the same on XP, does this mean maybe the bios is corrupted or something, i have serveral devices sharing irq 5,10 and 11 but have read on the net that is maybe OK under XP, so im really confused, the MB is about 3mths old only so the bios SHOULD be the latest surely??? any ideas people?

Gigabyte K8 MB
AMD Sempron 2600
Seagate IDE HDD (prim on IDE ch 1)
HP DVD writer (prim on IDE ch 2)
Win XP Home SP2 (but also took forever to boot on Linux)
ATI Radeon 5250 256MB video card (only tried on XP, had int VGA under Linux)

umm thats about all the specs I can think of if that helps.

any ideas please??? this is (as you can imagine) driving me nutso!

513344 2007-01-07 01:22:00 i'd seriously suggest you run a hard drive diagnostic program and a ram diagnostic ........two hours to boot ?.......you ARE kidding right ?.....i'd be getting concerned/annoyed if it took more than two minutes... drcspy (146)

Im definatly NOT kidding :groan: do you know of any diagnostics I could try please? the HDD and RAM were new so I had ASSUMED they were fine, but that is a possibility I guess:illogical

513346 2007-01-07 01:44:00 So you've reinstalled after it started doing this??

If not start from scratch and do a clean format/install.

How much ram is installed on it??

513347 2007-01-07 02:35:00 Seagate IDE HDD (prim on IDE ch 1)

Download Seatools from the Seagate website.

The IRQs are not set by the BIOS, not the OS. Shared IRQs are common, although some devices don't hang out together too well.

I concur with Drcspy, before you do anything else run disc diagnostics, preferably from a bootable CD so that you're not stressing the HDD.

Live (bootable) diagnostic and rescue CDs can be obtained from The Live CD List (www.livecdlist.com). I've linked the diagnostic CDs, but you can change the list to Rescue or whatever other flavour you like using the right hand drop down list.

If the drive is dying or the partition tables, MBR, Boot Sector is corrupted, reinstalling windows is unlikely to fix the problem and could make it worse.

Not entirely .
Under Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the ramifications for ACPI's Plug and Play are more extensive, and provide the following:

# Hardware resource allocation (and reallocation) . Drivers for Plug and Play devices do not assign their own resources . Instead, the required resources for a device are identified when the device is enumerated by the operating system . The Plug and Play Manager retrieves the requirements for each device during resource allocation . Based on the resource requests that each device makes, the Plug and Play Manager assigns the appropriate hardware resources, such as I/O ports, interrupt requests (IRQs), direct memory access (DMA) channels, and memory locations . The Plug and Play Manager reconfigures resource assignments when needed, such as when a device is added to the system, and requests resources that are already in use .

513349 2007-01-07 04:16:00 Ah yes, the good old win-modem being a case in point. Twas supposed to save fiddling around with IRQ jumpers if you had a conflict.

You rarely get IRQ issues with those sort of devices these days, but if you do, you fix them in Control Panel > Device manager > [device] Properties > Resources tab (IIRC).

Hey thanks for that, will go take a look, it may well be the HDD, which is annoying, although cheaper to replace than ram, the fact it was doing it on Linxux first suggests a HW fault of some kind :-(, will have a look at the site you suggested and see if i can make head nor tale of it . . . thanks for that!
