514044 2007-01-09 00:05:00 I have a 512mb stick of ram in the computer according to the IT guy who made it. Yet when I went on this site (www.systemrequirementslab.com) to see if a game will run on my computer (it has detailed video card requirements on it) it says I have 447.2mb of ram. Huh? I thought I had 512mb?
Has 64.8mb of the ram broken or something?

514045 2007-01-09 00:08:00 If u have a 64 mb video card that maybe using the ram, which is why it's showing the 447 mb.

If it was stuffed, it wouldn't work at all.

514047 2007-01-09 00:37:00 Ive got a PCI 64mb MX4000 at the moment. But that shouldnt be taking it from the ram should it?
There is a 64mb inbuilt one though, that i can't disable.
I can only choose not to use it
So I guess if I disable it I will get all my 512mb

It might.

There maybe an option in the BIOS to disable the on board card, if not, when u put another card in, it'll disable the on board card anyway.

There may also be an option in the BIOS as well to set the amount of ram the/a card can use. It maybe set to 64 mb by default.

Which is why it doesn't matter if you're using an on board video card or a PCI or AGP card. It'll use 64 mb for the card.

I'll have a look in the bios now but if there is an option to make the amount of ram the/a card can use to nil i'll have my whole 512mb back, and the MX4000 will be fine because it has it's own ram doesn't it?
And is it worth it buying another stick? (my mobo has 4 slots, two DDR and two DDR2)
Thanks for your help

514050 2007-01-09 01:07:00 Ah the BIOS may or may not have an option to put it on 0 .

Can't say I've seen a BIOS where u can set it to 0 .

64 mb maybe the default, and this may go to 256 + (it may depend on how much ram is on the video card thats installed) . In my case here, its on 256, since the card is 256 .

I think ram on a video card is different from physical ram, video card ram is for graphics etc for games .

So even if u can (or maybe able to) lower the amount of video ram, to 0, it may or may not affect games if u play games .

The more ram the better, BUT I would make sure u can use DDR and DDR2 together . On some systems, its one or the other, not both .

514051 2007-01-09 01:27:00 I've looked in the bios and theres nothing to make it nil. And I looked in the mobo manual and it doesn't say anything about you can only use DDR or DDR2 and not both so I assume you can Fishy (10540)
