514685 2007-01-10 07:40:00 Is there a way to create a startup XP CD in case of 'Emergency'? I mean when XP fails to boot and there are important files to be saved. Just like the good old DOS boot disk whereby I could boot up the machine and copy all those important files before reinstalling (or reformatting) the new OS. I know I can use Win98 to boot up the machine but it cannot read NTFS file format.

Can this be done at all?

514686 2007-01-10 08:44:00 Assuming you have not used NTFS encryption, A bootable version of linux works great.

Slax, Knoppix are my personal fav's since they are simple to use and have support for read and write to USB disk.

the link seems to be broken, anyway, I'll look up for knoppix.

Am I right to say that there is no way to do it in Windows environment?

514690 2007-01-10 09:51:00 Take the trailing / off and it should be fine.

You can boot to the recovery console in Windows either from the CD or by installing it as an option into the NTLDR (boot loader). But this is using the CLI - by using Knoppix you have a nice user friendly GUI to recover your files with.

514691 2007-01-10 10:22:00 I've tried to use the XP's recovery console but 9 out of 10 times, couldn't get the administrator's password right. :badpc::badpc: bk T (215)
