514639 2007-01-10 06:33:00 Hi,

Been thinking for getting Broadband from Xnet.

On dial-up now so i need to provide own modem, just rang sales team and they did not know what I was talking about. - No a good start

Question is what brand of ADSL modem required?

Question 2, I see heaps of "Xtra BB starter packs" on trademe.... Will one of these do as they have all the cables? or are they configgered to telecom (xtra) only.

Thanks in advance

It doesn't matter. Whatever brand takes your fancy.

You can buy one of those "xtra" ones if you want. They use Dlink 502Ts.
They aren't for Xtra, its just what Xtra sends.
You just enter your own username and password for your ISP and thats it. Nice and easy.

Oh and make sure you use ethernet - its miles better than USB.

514641 2007-01-10 09:25:00 I believe that DLink is not as good as it used to be. Netgear is as good as anything for the home market. I agree - make sure that it can be set up via ethernet not USB. You will get the ADSL settings from the provider. johnd (85)

514643 2007-01-11 19:49:00 I've set up BB connections on Xnet for two friends who weren't particularly savvy. Both were on a budget, and neither had demanding requirements. I used this (www.dse.co.nz)modem from DSE. It's cheap, simple to set up, and there was no difference in day to day browsing from the 4-port Dynalink router (RTA 770) which I used for my own connection at home. Lizard (2409)
