514343 2007-01-10 10:30:00 A reinstall would take 2-3 hrs if they do all the updates and have to download or find drivers for your laptop, but after that, you have to spend all the time reinstalling your old applications and restoring your data from your backups.

now why would you go to all that trouble ?....

pctek has the simplest answer

REPAIR INSTALL

very simple and only takes about 40mins

514345 2007-01-10 21:30:00 The problem with restoring from the disk is that I don't have any CD's, XP came installed. I think one of my friends may have a disk I will ask her. Jacquie (9851)
514346 2007-01-10 21:48:00 If she doesn't have the disk, I will try one of the earlier suggestions but I am not very computer literate. I think I know where I moved the files to - what an idiot. Otherwise i would be happy to pay one of you kind people to do it for me? I'm in Auckland. Jacquie (9851)
514347 2007-01-11 00:56:00 Well Jacquie, there is another alternative if you don't have the CD but it's a lot riskier (got to take risks) and we're still not sure what we are dealing with.

It's quite possible that the XP files are on the hard drive or in a hidden partition (do they still do this trick?), which means you need to to be able to create a bootdisk with NTFS read/write capabilities, which you can download from www.free-av.com which uses a floppy disk, but you can put it onto CD using ISO making software.

When you boot from it, you need to be familiar with DOS commands, changing directories, unhiding files, searching for files, copying files from source to destination, etc.

To find the location we just search for the file from C:\ doing: DIR ntldr /s /a, it will say on the screen Directory of ??? where ??? is where it found it, we should change directory to this location so CD ??? then we just copy the files we need, basically we just want to get it to a booting stage so we just need NTDETECT.COM and NTLDR, boot.ini should hopefully be alright, if not we will need that too or at least create that file. So just COPY ntldr + ntdetect.com C:\ and that should be it, you may want to look on the internet for boot.ini configurations, it should be pretty standard unless you don't have the Windows partition on C:\

This problem with the missing ntldr, I encountered a few of these problems not long ago, and I just thought it was just mistakes people made using their computer, and I found inside their recycle bin the ntdetect.com and ntldr file as well as a lot more of system hidden files, which I thought someone was just cleaning up their C:\ area and went a bit crazy on it, also had to create the boot.ini file, so you might have to do the same. I found no viruses on the machine so I just put it down as user mistake.

Cheers,

KK

my laptop came with a recovery partion, which allowed me to reinstall windows plus all the drivers/bundled crap after i accidentally unintalled something important in all the bundled crap:blush: luckily it was brand new without any files onboard

otherwise i only use a format/reinstall after a virus has ruined a machine beyond repair

514350 2007-01-12 05:57:00 I think I have moved a file on my old laptop, when I try to log on it says the NTLDR is missing. Is my best option to reinstall windows, the whole hard drive is backed up on another laptop. And how much would I expect to pay for this to be done?

haha why would u pay for reinstalling windows?can't u reinstall it yourself?
