514597 2007-01-10 03:04:00 HI all

Currently we are looking at trying to integrate some sort of VOIP and our Harrier cellphones (there are a few hundred of them here) and use our WLAN to take/make calls. Sorry if that's a bit confusing but expect you know what I mean. Free calls from/to the Harrier using our WLAN.

Is this possible, has anyone done it with a Harrier or other PDA, and if it is, can someone guide me to what hardware/software they used to achieve it?

Cheers

With that many devices would it not be much simpler to do a deal with your cellular carrier / PSTN provider?

Even if you could find some VOIP software the data charges would be out of this world!

514599 2007-01-10 03:46:00 Sorry I mean we want to use our own WLAN to make/recieve calls.
Dealing with current or another cell provider is not going to give us unbiased advice, I feel.
End aim to cut out any middle men...

514600 2007-01-10 04:14:00 Are you talking about calls with land line phones? that is easy to do but if you want to use the CDMA / GSM phones as well that will need involvement with you cellular carrier.

Why not talk to the vendor for your current PABX set-up as many of them offer IP trunks and some even have cellular trunks.

CISCO springs to mind as offering a complete VOIP solution.

514601 2007-01-10 08:59:00 I think what he is asking is, is it possible to run the cellphone not in cellphone mode and just use Wifi with his router and go online and talk for free.

If you use it in cellphone mode and access the Skype software or what software like MSN or ICQ and do a computer to computer chatting ..... it is going to cost you because u need to get online via cellular.

If you are talking about getting online and do it .. via your router. Maybe sometime can chime in.

PS. If you are wanting to run via cellphone mode .. ie., if u are outside and have no wifi hotspot or your own wireless router, you are going to rely on a telecommunication it depends if it is CDMA or GSM and that all you have in NZ is Telecom or Vodafone.

514602 2007-01-10 10:12:00 Hope you are not asking via VOIP via Slingshot or via Xnet VFX etc ...
Because I dont think PDAs are so fancy yet sporting a VOIP physical port so u can plug it into the router via its VOIP outlet. Your best bet if this if it supports a landline Telecom phone jack on your device. You can get device that converts normal telecom phone devices into VOIP - Linksys has a device for that job.

514603 2007-01-10 19:56:00 The most widely supported software would have to be Skype, as Nomad has already mentioned.

When I had my Jam & my K-Jam I didnt have much luck using anything aside from Skype.

The results were barely 'acceptable' when connecting via GPRS, but they were better than nothing (And due to the INSANE cost of GPRS, I would highly recommend you ONLY connect via WiFi)

UMTS data doesnt cost quite as much, the cheapest plan would be decent enough for a bit of Skype use... but the Harrier doesnt support UMTS does it? Its an 027 phone IIRC...?

514604 2007-01-10 20:08:00 Thanks for the replies guys

Am looking at Skype but want things as transperant as possible, so this is not ideal.
IDeally what we do want is calls that have come in on the PABX to be transferred to Harriers (as they are now but obviously at a cost) using our WLAN.
We want to dump the current PABX so could look at a VIOP PABX if that would make this work, but I guess main thing is can the Harrier/Apaches take/make calls using wifi, other than using products such as Skype ?
I'm looking at a couple of products, Ifon & Sipcat at the moment. Not sure if they will do this yet, busy on other things also.

Cheers again

514605 2007-01-10 22:03:00 I know nothing about that.
You may want to research into how you are going to integrate it up.

I see that Sipcat has a free demo for 4 users, you can always try it out ....
It doesn't mention anything about wifi.

It might be easier just get a cordless VOIP phone by Cisco.
Its not that you in NZ you can walk around with your Wifi device and make calls around the city. You would need a wireless access point in the office or a hotspot outside or use things like Telecom Wifi service (payable) but that might not be too extensive covered. I think the issue is PDAs should be able to get online ok for Wifi, but you need a way to integrate that into your PABX. If you are in the office area, that might be a bit easier if there are PABX devices that connect without going via the web.

I would hit the yellow pages and ring around re: VOIP/IP phones and see if they can come up up w/ a wireless solution for you and maybe integrate it into a PDA. If none you can learn more about it .. and continue your own search on the internet.

I think the key is locate the "softphone" software for each PDA ...
PDA shouldn't have an issue connecting to routers.
No idea how ones can forward PBX to PDAs .. thou .......
