515689 2007-01-14 03:06:00 hi there. a cupl of weeks ago i was using my computer when it started making a rather loud humming noise from it. i turned it off immediately then restarted it. it didnt do this for about another hour before it happened again. this happened for a few days. now whenever i turn it on it makes this noise immediately. I was wondering what this could be?? whether its something touching the fan?my dad said that it could be something to do with the harddrive but we really dont know.please help. gradebdan (2186)
515690 2007-01-14 03:09:00 99 percent channce its a fan that is worn and no longer spinning true.

While your PC is running tap the PSU directly infront of the fan, If teh noise goes away for a short time then you have identified the culprit.

If not it maybe a case fan, component fan,cpu fan, Mobo fan.....

515691 2007-01-14 03:54:00 How old is the computer?

How much louder would you think it's gotten?

You will want to check if the fan of the PSU is still working, light tissue paper held behind it will show whether there's air being blown out, if you can't tell by holding your hand near it. Give it a tap like Metla suggested but not too hard that you bend the grill, else it may prevent the fan from spinning.

It might be time for a dust clean out and to make sure the fans inside the computer are running. If you notice a fan not spinning, it's possible it's warped out of shape and needs replacement, better to replace than try to fix it, as after a few years, the plastic is very brittle.

Sometimes a PSU can loosen around the screws too, which gives it enough room to move about causing vibration and making this humming noise. Actually most components like HDD can become loose and cause this vibration so make sure they're tight, but not too tight.

CDs left in the CDROM drive, a possibility, but you'd probably know the sound of a CD spinning in the drive.

Loose power connectors, back of the case, maybe back of monitor unless you're certain it's coming from the case.

Cheers,

KK

515693 2007-01-14 10:48:00 Maybe the weather has got a little warmer, and the fan RPM have increased to give added cooling, this would be normal.
Then again, a fan bearing may be suffering from lack of oil of the correct properties. It is relatively easy to re-oil the fan bearings.

omg (bangs head on desk)

that is shocking, how didn't i come up with that?:p

as for the noise, my experience is it being dust, or a power cable. find which fan it is. if it isn't attached to anything expensive, just blow it reeeaaaaal hard the wrong way, otherwise, blow it almost as hard:D

515695 2007-01-14 19:21:00 as for the noise, my experience is it being dust, or a power cable. How is dust going to cause the noise? And unless there's a flippin big turbine inside blowing onto a cable and it's reverberating I can't understand how a cable can cause a noise either.

Anyway, if the noise is there all the time now, the time to be worried is when the noise stops!

515696 2007-01-14 22:19:00 Just a possibility...

I had an external hdd that would make a noise from time to time (the misses and I likened it to a cow saying: "Moooooooooooo"...lol)

Anyways the hdd eventually failed completely.

dust sticks to itself and if it's solid enough (like hairs) they can get on a fan's intake side and get clipped by the passing fan blades.

my one episode with wires involved a carefully tucked away video card fan coming untucked and sitting against the fan blades creating a VERY loud noise. strange this was i had used this card before and never had any problems with it (same brand, identical cards)
