515634 2007-01-14 01:44:00 I've got this old CPU:
"Intel P4 1.7GHZ/256/488/1.75V, SL5UG MALAY"

What are those code numbers representing? I do know it's a Pentium 4 1.7 GHZ but what are the remaining codes?

I am thinking of getting a motherboard for this CPU as i've got all other bits and pieces. What MB should I get for this CPU, a second hand from Trademe will be OK. How much can I expect it to be? Not prepared to spend tooooo much money on it, though.

Other than Socket 478 ( I think it is) what other specs should I look out? Is FSB a critical factor in choosing a MB, are they down ward compatible?

Cheers

515635 2007-01-14 02:15:00 The rest of the code is most probably related to the mobo u have.

Nothing to worry bout, if u change the mobo.

Well 478 pin mobos these days, are pretty hard to find. They're kinda obsolete.

I had to look around a bit to find one myself. I had to go to Newmarket, even tho there's a computer shop down the road and one in Symonds St.

BUT, neither stock 478 pin mobos any more.

I wouldn't really trust 2nd hand mobos. I would rather buy it. At least u can go back to the shop, if it doesn't work.

Depends on what your mobo supports (the FSB), if it supports 400/533 and 800, and you have a 800 FSB CPU, then get a 800 FSB mobo.

You have to read what the mobo u plan to get supports.

I made 2 mistakes, the only DDR ram I've got is DDR 400, but the mobo (in the other PC here), the ram that's in it now, only goes to 333. (altho it does support DDR 400, its not guaranteed to work).

The system still works, BUT only @ 266. By default.

And the previous mobo that was in it was SIS-based. Good but it lagged too much, and it went in the bin.

And obviously if your mobo only supports 400/533 FSB, u cant use put a 800 FSB cpu in it.

BUT, if your mobo supports 400/533/800 FSB, then u can use a 400/533/800 FSB CPU.

Want to bet? You can't guarantee that at all. The number of people I've met who bought PC stuff off Trademe and then had problems........risky......

515637 2007-01-14 02:24:00 So, what FSB is this CPU? Is it 488? I think it is really hard to find a FSB488 MB these days! Can I use a 533 FSB MB? bk T (215)
515638 2007-01-14 02:28:00 There is no 488 FSB that I know of .

It's either 400/533 or 800 . Or higher, if there are higher FSB's out there .

It'll be or should be printed on the top of the CPU . (the FSB and the speed) .

If u know that brand/model the mobo is, Google or Yahoo will give u the site for it . And tell u what FSB it supports .

515639 2007-01-14 02:42:00 But first, I have to identify the FSB of this CPU. All the numbers printed on the CPU are mentioned above. And there is another line of prints below those: "L1418835-1166" - which I think is not relevant, if I am right. bk T (215)
515640 2007-01-14 02:50:00 You'll have to look on the mobo to see whats printed on it . So, u can find out what the brand and model is .

The 256 in your first post maybe 256k cache .

I don't know what the 488 means in it .

515642 2007-01-14 20:47:00 Get Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com)

That'll or may tell u what the mobo is, and what FSB you've got and what u can get
