515263 2007-01-12 20:57:00 A friend is wanting to use his iPod with Windows 98SE but since iPod and iTunes do not support Win98 I am wondering how successful third-party software is to overcome this.

Is anyone here using their iPod with Win98?

515264 2007-01-12 21:07:00 Winamp supports Ipods natively now . As well as some Creative players . And most probably a few other MP3 players .

Not too sure if the Portables option supports 98se tho .

It can also list / transfer MP3's .

If it doesn't, install the Mlipod plugin . ( . net/project/showfiles . php?group_id=106528" target="_blank">sourceforge . net) then it will .

515265 2007-01-12 21:28:00 Thanks Speedy. I'm also wondering about the iPod's USB support as it looks like a third-party driver needs to be installed for that as well. I don't think this PC has firewire. FoxyMX (5)
515266 2007-01-12 21:31:00 Upgrade the PC to 2k or XP, then it'll work perfectly. pcuser42 (130)
515267 2007-01-12 21:34:00 Does she/he have USB 2 ports on the computer??

Can't see why it wouldn't work. Since I'm pretty surer 98 SE + supports USB 2.

Has she/he got the USB cable for the Ipod?

Does 98 SE ask for a driver, when u plug it into a USB port?

Altho on the Apple site it says

Windows system requirements

* PC with USB 2.0
* Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
* iTunes 7 or later

So, 98 SE may not work.

515268 2007-01-12 21:40:00 iPods can be installed on Win98Se but a fiddly workaround is generally required. It is generally much easier to use Win2000 winmacguy (3367)

Yes, he does have USB ports but "Windows 98 and ME does not come with the drivers you need to access your iPod." from here (www.vonnieda.org). Other sites say the same. You have to get third-party USB drivers.

515270 2007-01-12 21:54:00 This (www.technical-assistance.co.uk)

May fix it, BUT it's not an official version.

And either Winamp or Xplay 2 (www.mediafour.com) should work. Altho Xplay 2 is a 15 day trial by the looks of it.

There is another site, but u haveta pay $5 to download a driver/exe install file, which says it supports 98 with an Ipod.

515271 2007-01-12 21:56:00 Thanks Speedy, I'll pass that info on. :) FoxyMX (5)
515272 2007-01-12 22:05:00 No worries :)

I think Anapod and Anapod Explorer I think they're called can also be used for Ipod .

I think 1 or both are open source . There should be some more open source programs out there somewhere .
