(It translates domain names into IP addresses eg 210.48.100.45 into www.pressf1.co.nz)

When you type in www.pressf1.co.nz, it goes to the DNS server and asks for its IP Address, in pressf1's case its 210.48.100.45.
This is so that a machine can be relocated, change ISPs perhaps, a website might get a new host, and it can still be found.
Besides, aside from me, I dont know how many people remember PressF1 as being: 210.48.100.45, makes things heaps harder to remember ;)
