515564 2007-01-26 00:39:00 It was a completely fresh build of Windows. I decided to wipe my entire system and start from scratch, since I was going to get a new AV. I hadn't done it for over 18 months so a clean build was probably called for. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
515565 2007-01-26 00:48:00 Only MS can get away with calling that sort of behaviour a "feature", so it remains aberrant behaviour for NOD to lock your system and is therefore fixable.

Personally, yours and Wong's experience is the first time I've heard of it, but then I haven't been hanging out at the NOD forums looking for outraged (non)users.

Speaking of NOD forums, did you check it out or ask NOD?

515566 2007-01-26 05:29:00 We have sold NOD32 to a lot of people at work, and none of them have come back complaining about it making their computer lock up or go slow. Greven (91)
515567 2007-01-30 23:05:00 It would appear, I now have the same problem under AVAST.

According to this thread (episteme.arstechnica.com), I need to turn off automatic updates, and manually check Windows Update.

515568 2007-01-31 05:41:00 Well, thanks to this forum I installed Avast and it appears to be working well though it seems a trifle slow but that may just be me. As an additional line of defence I installed the 30 day trial of NOD32 and will assess them side by side. I think from what I have read in the posts that NOD32 appears to get the "nod" from most who use it. Oddly enough when talking to 2 IT techies they both suggested AVG Free Edition for home users and use the Pro edition for their own in-house use-confusion upon confusion!! I did try AVG but the time it took to check e-mails was just not on. Avast or NOD 32 does not appear to slow anything down so it's a simple question of evaluating each and see how they go.
I have a feeling I may just go with NOD32 for a year and see how it compares to Avast-pity I didn't subscribe to PC World when I had the chance

Not a good idea
