| 515087 | 2007-01-13 15:01:00 | Vista licensed for use on devices of "up to two processors" only Multi-processor conundrum By INQUIRER newsdesk: Tuesday 09 January 2007, 15:32 INTERESTING SNIPPETS from Microsoft's licence terms for retail software reveal that the software maker insist that users must assign their copy of the upcoming operating system to what Microsoft terms one "single device". The device, the outfit helpfully explains, is a "physical hardware system". A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device, the fimr notes. The terms state that the software may be used "on up to two processors on that device at one time." This may of course will cause much stratching of heads with innocent users as they are persuaded to buy more multi-core and multi-processor systems in the future. With chip makers happily cobbling together more and more processors to achieve more apparently parallel cores, the definition of what constitutes a single processor may need tightening up if we're to avoid volish copyright cops banging on too many doors. AMD eight-core anyone? |

| 515088 | 2007-01-13 19:25:00 | We are at least 2 years away from seeing a Game that "only" support DX10. "Crysis" for instance (yet to be released - Far Cry 2 PC) which has been hailed by many as a DX10 game was built on DX9 technology with a few DX10 features being built in. It will support DX9 no problems. Hope you're right. It will get harder though, I know, I changed to XP from 98 years after the rest of the world. Yes Crysis will have DX9 support, which is fine if you want to run it in lesser mode....... And Memphis, I know all about the nasty stuff in Vista, but what can we do if we want games? Some Linux guru hurry up and incorporate DX into Linux............ |

| 515095 | 2007-01-14 01:13:00 | Agreed 100%. I read the latest review in APC Mag recently and about the only thing worth while in Vista at this stage is the improved search which would make it as fast as what Apple currently has since OS X 10.4 was released about 12 months ago. Other than that I don't see a whole lot of redeeming features in it. Apparently the British education facilities are being advised to avoid Vista for at least another 12 months. Apart from a lot of software only working on vista in the future. The same was said about win xp, which doesn't really offer much more than win 2k. Now almost everyone has win xp. With every new release of windows, you always get people saying that the newer one doesn't offer much in terms of new features, but us lemmings always end up buying it, or it comes OEM with a new computer.. |
