515534 2007-01-14 02:15:00 NOD32 is a pay AV, even if you get the first year free, remember you will need to pay the following year (although its cheap).

If you are happy with your free AV then don't worry.

If you are not happy with your AV, free or otherwise then get NOD32 - it is good.

There are 4 bits:
AMON - file system monitor - like they all do
IMON - internet monitor
DMON - MS document monitoring which I don't use
EMON - Outlook email monitoring which I don't use

The internet monitor is good, I once went to a rather risky site and went to download a file and up popped Imon telling me the file had a virus. Before it completed downloading.

Never seen AVG do that.

And while a lot of my customers end up with AVG, which is fine, I had one with rather a bad infestation one time, although AVG had cleaned up a lot, I knew it still had some so hooked it up to my PC and scanned with NOD32 (among other things) and found 3 more.

515535 2007-01-14 02:23:00 No, I've been a subscriber for donkey's years and I got it in the mail (unexpectedly) yesterday.

You probably renewed your subscription in dec/jan though right?

You don't have to be a new subscriber to get the free gifts, you just have to "subscribe to PCW", which includes renewing your current subscription.

i also got the NOD32 subscription. Very happy with it :)

515536 2007-01-14 03:38:00 But the AVG interface is lot better then Avast (I have use Avast on one of our computers here & it was not as easy to config as AVG & it imo tend to be more confusing then AVG)

I actually find Avast's interface a lot easier to use than AVG's. Have you got the latest version of AVG? It's even worse than before - took me ages to find the setting to make AVG ask for the location of definitions updates.

515537 2007-01-14 03:48:00 I agree with this sentiment.
But how would you know if it performed better?
And how do you know how well Avast is performing?
I haven't had a virus, so I guess Avast works OK, but how could it work BETTER than that?

If I installed NOD32 and it found viruses that Avast had not then obviously it would be the more superior program. I have installed NOD32 on sick computers in the past when I suspected that they still had gremlins on them and sure enough, it found them and cleaned them. Those computers had AVG rather than Avast however.

I am happy with Avast as it is doing a good job for me and I don't have any reason to suspect that it has missed anything. Interestingly it always picks up the files that I know are infected when AVG used to ignore them.

515538 2007-01-14 03:49:00 hmmm....On the default (and very basic) initial screen for AVG is a button (one of only 3) marked "check for updates" after hitting this you are asked if you wish to check the net or a location on the HD, and you are given the option of keeping your selection as the default setting, which donsn't over ride AVG peridicly checking the net for updates.

Works a treat and I would struggle to see how it could be made any easier.....:thumbs::thumbs:

515539 2007-01-14 04:29:00 Ah, but it had previously been set for downloading the updates from internet, not ask where to check for updates. I had to find the option to change it back to ask so that I could direct it to a previously downloaded update on the USB flash drive instead of the internet. ;)

It took a bit of searching to find that option.

515542 2007-01-14 05:16:00 :( Free NOD32? :p Didn't subsribe PC World NZ, but I already paid my Bit Defender 2007 last year already. Pretty good when it comes to virus blocking and detecting. PedalSlammer (8511)

Avast has the same thing. If u download a dodgy file it'll alert u.

And then u have the option to delete it.
