515147 2007-01-12 06:34:00 I reported on the flow restriction of case grills, and various flow measurements on fans some time ago, it's somewhere on PF1.

The typical hole patterns that are punched into cases where the fans are mounted reduce the potential flow area of the fan by around 0.5, this means that fan flow is only about 0.5 of rated flow.

It's a good idea to get out the tin snips and cut a full size hole for the fan :)

A 60mm fan is going to make pretty well stuff-all difference :), 120mm fans are really needed to get the air moving through.

That DSE Titan 80mm fan I referenced is very much quieter than faster 80mm fans, that is why it has only about the same flow rate as a cpu 70mm fan.

515148 2007-01-12 06:45:00 Its good your sorting it out.

For tackling the noise get a fan controller.;)

The fans plug into it and you then plug the fan controller into a spare power supply plug.

The fan controller goes into the front of the case for you to control, either in a floppy drive slot or a cd/dvd slot depending on what size fan controller you get.

So when gaming etc-producing heat, turn up the fans
and when doing internet etc you can turn the fans down to make it quite but still keep things cool.
You can get them for about $30.00 from computer shops.

515149 2007-01-12 07:13:00 If you can at sometime get a case with 120mm fans, you dont have to spend much on a case if you dont want too,but a 60mm fan wont bring in much cool air, better then nothing though.

If you wanted to keep what you have you maybe able to mod it to fit 120mm fans.
(But its easier to just buy the case with 120mm fans).

515150 2007-01-12 07:14:00 One thing occurred to me. Have you checked that the power supply fan is running?

Yep definatly

I just got back from Dick Smith Electronics with my nice new 60mm and 80mm fans :) too bad that I didnt measure the mount points, 60+80 is the configuration from my server :) oh well the 80mm fits on the front and will pop back tomorrow to get it swapped, Does anyone else know the next standard size up from 80mm?

515152 2007-01-12 07:56:00 If I'm not too late to warn you, I bought one of those CPU heatsink/fans you mentioned in your original post. It is very very noisy, so I would steer clear of it. somebody (208)
515153 2007-01-12 08:00:00 DSE are slowly becoming pathetic as regards componentry, it's almost beginning to be a waste of time checking out their current stock when looking for electronic and computer bits and pieces. Nearly everything is being marked as Clearance, and only stocked in some god-forsaken branch store :)

Within a year or two they probably wont be selling components at all.

They used to stock 90mm fans, but now it is 60mm, 80mm, 120mm.

On one of my computers, I cut a 120mm hole in the side panel, and managed to fix a 120mm fan to the chassis inside. The air blows almost straight onto the cpu which is a 1.333Mhz Athlon Thunderbird, not the coolest of cpus. It made a very big difference.
