515067 2007-01-11 23:53:00 Thanks for the advice.

Dual core cpu and 2GB ram sounds alot to me are they really that necessary or is it more for future proofing.
JasonF (11755)
515068 2007-01-12 00:00:00 Both. It may be a lot for development - depending on what your developing, but for games and music combined it is essential. Many setups today will take a lot more than 2GB of RAM as long as you can afford it. The Intel chip should kleep you satisfied for the forseeable future. winmacguy (3367)
515069 2007-01-12 03:16:00 You could get a upgrade box.:)
and keep what you have for a multimedia pc/internet pc/family pc and you have the new one all to yourself for gaming.:D

515070 2007-01-12 03:56:00 Nope, The 2gb of ram and dual core is not essential, not for current games or music, and practically nothing will make use of 2GB of ram.

However you will generally pay close to the same price to get lesser hardware, And while you can always add more ram the cpu is something I wouldn't skimp on (meaning buy the best available at a reasonable cost, Don't save 20 bucks and buy a weak cpu or spend hundreds for something only slightly faster).

And of course, it will all help in the future. Upgrades are a pain in the a'hole.

uh, WRONG, if he is serious about gaming, he'll need 1 GB MINIMUM, especially since the unoptimised failures that are BF2 and BF2142 became popular

now i wouldn't upgrade that, it's too old. here's what i recommend, and are actually doing (when i have the cash in two weeks, assuming all is in stock)
good motherboard (c1com.co.nz), stable base to work from that wont be crap within 3 minutes, my example is a bit expensive but a bargain - don't buy foxconn or elitegroup (ecs)
amd athlon64 3800 (c1com.co.nz) skt am2 this isn't dual core and intel would be ok also, but it's the fastest one before they go dual, for your use i'd suggest dual, but for pure gaming there isn't much point
2X 512 dual channel DDR2 decent RAM (www.extremepc.co.nz), ie. wont die or cause issues, can be overclocked considerably
psu (c1com.co.nz), cheapo case (madkiwihosting.co.nz) as i will use current case and put old bits in the new one
you could keep your HDD if it is sata, otherwise this is best size HDD/value for money (c1com.co.nz)

i'd got for the 7600GT, but my 6600gt will have to do for now

i would not, and am not buying anything higher spec, with the exception of the CPU, as you may want to go dual core. typically amd is cheaper than intel, and historically amd has been better for gaming, but i understand it's getting pretty even now.

the psu could go cheaper, and the ram (i'm told) can be overclocked to 900MHZ, making it very cheap if you're brave

and yes, that comes to $800, plus video of $200-$300. that's a decent rig for a grand. don't let anyone tell you you need to spend more than that cause they're thinking sli video with a terabyte of storage etc etc

i'd actually say that rig i'm building is a bit overkill (from a student's wallet perspective)

515072 2007-01-12 12:20:00 I actually had the BF range of games in mind when I said practically nothing will make use of 2GB, The BF games are badly coded in that regard, There is nothing present in game to demand 2GB (even if it does run better with 2GB) so I wouldn't recommend someone has to have 2GB of ram just for 2 titles based on the exact same platform.

On the same note if he had stated he wanted to build a dedicated video editing machine, a high end gaming rig or that he liked to work on huge uncompressed images my advice would have been different, The answer should reflect the question.

well i did say only to buy 1 gb of ram... 2gb is an advisable upgrade. i was playing Call Of Juarez earlier tonight and noticed my 1GB of ram was full, but only just - i was more worried about the whole system sitting on 50 degrees except for my video card doing 90:eek:

bf1942 and the desert combat mod are far better than bf2 IMO. somehow EA managed to make a game (BF2) that takes longer to patch than it does to install, and has to restart every time you alter the graphics even slightly, and THEN they put new skins on it, made a big fuss, and resold the SAME DAMN GAME back to us!
motorbyclist (188)
515074 2007-01-12 13:00:00 The games will certainly run better with more ram as load times and re spawns,stuttering/choppiness/running slow and general game play is better, not just in bf2 but in other games as well.

Plus new good graphical games specs are increasing if you check on the game boxes in the shops.

But hay its not my pc,have as much as you want.

When DX 10 games come expect to need more ram as well as higher pc specs.

Me I have 2gb and I dont have to worry about any game specs!!
Well at least for the present time that is!!!

515075 2007-01-12 13:20:00 you'll need the ram if you intend to go vista too, along with the 7600gt for sure... why anyone would go vista at this stage is beyond me though:confused: motorbyclist (188)
515076 2007-01-12 21:33:00 I am not a big player of games like BF2 i am more of a RTS person would RTS games require a lot less to run or are most types of games reasonably similar. JasonF (11755)
