516473 2007-01-16 08:05:00 System specs:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA8S648-FX-775
CPU: Intel P4 #531 3GHz
RAM: 512MB DDR400 (double sided)
GPU: Asus ATi 9550 GE/TD 128MB
HDD: 80GB Seagate Barracuda
Windows XP Home SP2
Office 2003 Professional Edition

Ok the system boots up and gets through post, the screen then goes blank and the monitor enters sleep mode. I can't get into the BIOS either, it acknowledges that the system is entering BIOS setup but then the screening goes blank too.

My observations:
HDD appears to be running fine and is detected properly.
CPU is seated correctly fan going.
GPU seated properly and fan going.
RAM seated properly and no problems there.
Apart from dusty innards everything appears to be fine.

Suspicions:
Owner of the PC is at best decribed as a PC novice but known to "tinker"
I was told... "It just went blank" (that is the screen went blank, not the owner :waughh: )

No idea as to what they were doing at the time "it just went blank."

I haven't had a really good look at the machine but I'm fairly confident that said owner of the machine (a teenager) may have tinkered with the machine and didn't know how to get things back the way they were before.

I suspect that :
a) possible driver update... using the wrong driver
b) switched displays or tried to hook the PC up to a TV and didn't know how to revert back to the flatscreen monitor.

I may try resetting the BIOS and see if that fixes the problem.
Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

516474 2007-01-16 08:24:00 If it's connected to a TV does anything appear on the TV

When it boots up?

If it does, u can / should be able to revert back to the monitor by turning the TV on, and doing the same thing u would do in Windows (right mouse on properties / settings / settings / advanced). Select the monitor as the main display, and it should work.

I don't think a driver would be the prob. It would still turn on and would most probably crash or the screen would look funny, once it booted into Windows.

One way to test if there is a hardware issue would be to attempt to boot up from a live CDROM such as Knoppix. At least you would then know if the problem was WIndows or not.

Haven't hooked it up to a TV myself, just had a quick look at it at work and connected it to a 17" LCD, so not sure if that is the case, I am aware of resetting it back from TV to monitor though ;)

Can't get into SAFE mode as the screen goes blank so that idea is a dudd until I can get video output after the machine posts successfully.

Thanks for the input though. Will try booting from Knoppix 4 disc and see if that helps at all.

516477 2007-01-19 03:49:00 Ok cleared the CMOS and system booted with an error message "the file system has been deleted or is corrupt please run recovery console to repair the problem . "

So popped the Windows CD into the machine and couldn't get into recovery console because I had forgotten the Admin password . . . . :annoyed:

Rebooted and it went straight into Windows without any hassles .

Rebooted (hot and cold starts) and everything appears to be normal .

Thanks for all your help guys .

cheers
