516388 2007-01-16 05:05:00 Hi All

My PC failed to boot (XP Prof) except into safe mode when selected. I needed to use it so ran msconfig and selected /safeboot.

I then decided to use my XP disk and do an install of XP OS... but unfortunately i also left it in the /safeboot mode.

Now partway thru the install process it tries to reboot but comes up with a message box that says setup cant run in safemode. I click OK, it reboots into safe mode with a message box that says setup cant run in safemode. I click OK, it reboots into safe mode with a message box that says setup cant run in safemode. I click ok, it reboots into safe mode....... etc!!!!!!!!!

Can someone please help by sugesting how I can turn safe mode off so I can continue my XP install. I don't have the start button available, just a black screen with safemode on it and the message box.

All helpful sugestions appreciated

Chris

516389 2007-01-16 05:21:00 Did u do a clean install, or did u install XP over XP while in Windows?

It sounds like u were installing while in Windows. Change the bootdisk in the BIOS to the XP cd, and do a clean install.

516390 2007-01-16 06:39:00 If you can get to a command prompt by booting off a bootable disk or other method.
In the c:\ directory you can edit boot.ini and remove (only) the "/safeboot"

You could either copy it, and on another computer edit it, then copy over the original. Or slave the problem drive and modify it.
You may be able to boot off the XP disk and use the repair console. It has a command prompt. It doesn't have an edit facility, but does have a COPY command.

I was doing an install over the current installed XP. The BIOS is already changed to boot from CD-ROM. It's because it was set to safemode that is causing the problem.

But, was the cd in the cd so it could boot from the CD?? And did u press a key, so, it could go to the install screen??

So it could format, then reinstall XP?

It shouldn't go to the main screen in XP when its formatting / installing XP. Until its finished installing XP. When u do a clean install.

Thats a bad idea, creates a mess .
Ether do a repair install, which leaves the user stuff intact or a complete new install, wiping the original first .
