516334 2007-01-16 01:02:00 Afternoon guys,

Well 5 days after installation I am just about ready to dump this new router I got from Acsent. (this is the model here www.ascent.co.nz )

It is a Level One FBR-1418TX and it works OK...except....

For the absolute life of me I cannot work out how to make the router allow my PC to do a FTP upload/download.... I have tried all of the suggestions on giving my PC a fixed IP address (interestingly, the router always assigns the PC's on the network the same IP address anyway without having to fix them)
and it still makes no difference...I am starting to think that I should of bought a router that has a better setup interface so a newbie like me could configure it.

I see that this router is listed in the "Most Popular" section on Ascent's site....so does anyone else have one, and if they do, do they have FTP up/download enabled? Can they help me set it up on mine? I must be missing something simple but I have tried just about all the settings in every menu and searched the net high and low:angry :angry

Anyway rant over...all help is appreciated immensly!!!

PS - if anyone understands the manual better than I it can be found here:

516335 2007-01-16 07:46:00 I haven't been following your trials and tribulations, and this may be going over old ground, but are you 100% sure it's the router that is the problem?
1. Have you tried plugging your Telstra modem straight into the network card on your PC, then ftp'ing?
2. Have you tried accessing an ftp site from a browser? For example, open a new tab in Firefox or IE and paste this in: ftp://ftp.bom.gov.au/
3. Have you disabled all firewalls before trying to ftp?

Sometimes, the cause of such problems is not what appears obvious, but something else entirely.

516336 2007-01-16 09:35:00 Hiya Tideman,

Firstly thanks heaps for replying.... interestingly I can apparently connect to that site ... it opens a window with a lot of different folders called:
(I neededto change the Page setting to display page in windows)

anon, anon2, pub, register, register2

Is my router/PC displaying the correct thing/info from this site as you would expect?

Fingers crossed its not my router and its something I can't control!!!

516337 2007-01-16 09:40:00 Yup. It's the Bureau of Met in Oz (Equiv of Met Service here).
So, it's not your router.
My guess is it's your ftp software.
What are you using?

516338 2007-01-16 21:57:00 It sounds like you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox for FTP.
These are not very good at FTP. Downloading yes but not uploading.

I use FlashFXP whenever I need to use FTP.

You don't have to do anything to the router to allow FTP uploading / downloading FROM YOUR COMPUTER / NETWORK.
If you want to host your own FTP server then you will need to open a port on the router to allow access from the internet.

516339 2007-01-17 00:40:00 Hi guys,

Thanks heaps for your input and advice .

I run a program called "Weather Display" for analyses and graphing my weather station data . This program automatically used to update my weather station page with local conditions every 30 mins using a built in FTP application called "ftpupd . exe"

I don't need to use FTP at any other stage apart from with this application .

Does my router need to be configured to allow Weather Display to send data (via FTP) to the remote server which hosts my weather station site?

Keep the advice coming, its really appreciated . :help:

Thanks again!

516340 2007-01-17 01:03:00 As was said before, you will need to open port 21 by setting up a virtual server in the router, because your weather program is behaving like an FTP server.

The manual is quite easy to follow to do this, just enter the port number and the IP address of the computer the weather station program is on, save, and voila!

Speedys link in the other thread also showed how step by step.

The advantage of a fixed IP is that the virtual server will always refer to that specific computer.
If you use DHCP, and not all computers on your network are switched on, then there is a possibility of a different IP being allocated.

The moderators should merge these two threads, as they are about the same topic, and the same things are being said over again :)

516341 2007-01-18 21:40:00 Sorry Terry,

I was'nt trying to upset the regulars on the Forum by having two threads going at once!

I have followed all of the advice given to setup the router to allow Port 21 to be forwarded. It does appear on the surface to be as simple as you say, however, even after setting the IP address of the WX PC to be allowed to use Port 21, the router will still block any FTP uploads.

I followed Speedy's advice (and the link to PortForward.com) in setting the WX PC to have a fixed IP address, however, even after allocating the IP address of 192.168.123.136 to the Weather PC (and having it show this IP address in windows/network connections) the router web GUI still shows it as 192.168.123.159 in the routers client list screen. Refreshing and/or rebootng the router does not change this.

At this stage I have canned my weather site and will only upload data to CWOP and Weather Underground until I can resolve the issue.

Again, thanks for the help, and apologies for having 2 threads going at once.

Cheers,
Andrew

516342 2007-01-18 23:10:00 An update.....

Today I created myself a new ftp account at ftp.drivehq.com. I then downloaded a trial version of WS_FTP. Using this third party FTP client, I was able to easily transfer files between my PC and drivehq via FTP.

This must surely mean that the fault is either with the FTP client being used by my weather software or at the weather site that my PC uploads weather data to normally.

If I try to connect to the old weather site using WS_FTP I get this error message:

Finding Host ftp.tokaanuskihire.co.nz ...
Connecting to 64.33.19.149:21
Connected to 64.33.19.149:21 in 0.000000 seconds, Waiting for Server Response
Error reading response from server.
Connection closed by remote host.
Host type (1): Automatic Detect

What do you guys reckon?

516343 2007-01-19 00:20:00 One or two things come into mind.
There may be a logon problem using WS-FTP to connect to the weather station, which may be built in with your special program?

FTP normally requires a user id like 'anonymous' and a password.

To check whether port 21 is open and being forwarded, go to the Gibson Research site using your Weather PC, www.grc.com scroll down to Shields Up and run the tests.

Then there may be an issue with your software firewall, if present.

These things can drive one bonkers :)

I can't see in the manual where it says about showing a list of IP addresses connected to the router.

Though you have said that it all worked well before connecting the router in, does it still do so if you connect to the internet direct via the cable modem?
This would test separately whether the weather site is working?
