| 516449 | 2007-01-16 08:23:00 | Four days ago my batch files stopped running from any GUI screen . They will run from a DOS box but if run from a gui screen, a dos box briefly flashes on screen and then vanishes with no execution . Funny thing, though, a scheduled task running a batch file runs OK (after re-inputting my user password for this task) . Googling hasn't helped so wonder if anyone has seen this before and knows how to troubleshoot or fix it . About the same time I lost the ability to boot in safe mode . Boots fine in normal mode but in safe mode it loads dvrs then reboots . Don't know whether these two events are linked or not . I can't use XP restore as the restore points vanished, too! I could restore the C: image I have but it is over 2 months old (time flies!) . I tried a sfc /scannow but it wants my SP2 CD inserted . My original XP disk is pre sp2 and it doesn't accept my slipstreamed CD . Background:- 8 days ago my ASUS A8N-SLI mobo suddenly started reporting PATA controller errors . This had a peculiar effect on my SATA OS boot drive and so data/prog files could have been corrupted but everything else seems to be fine . |

I found that they would run in Windows Explorer but not in the file management tool I usually use, xplorer2 . Dunno why this is but there you go . I also found that the shortcuts to my batch files would not run from the startup folder until I went to their properties and added the batch file location to the "Start In" box . What changed this I have no idea as these batch files have been running for a year or so! Now I only have the safe mode boot problem!! Must dig into boot logs . Progress is good, though:) |
