516378 2007-01-16 04:25:00 I've been using my Seagate 7200 . 7 St380011A, that 80gb hard drive for just over a year now, and now i think it is on the brink of death .

This drive is my primary drive, and i boot windows off it, recently, i've been hearing extremely odd clicking and squeaking noises comming from it . this only seems to happen when the hard drive is in use, or when the orange light is flashing . This also happens randomly, like when there is a screen saver on . .
and the drive is clicking away as i type, no kidding . The sound i know is comming from the hard drive . that is basically the only thing in my pc that has moving parts, apart from a few fans . and my mb dosent have a buzzer or any speaker attached . so i'm sure its the drive that is threatening to die .
The time taken to boot windows is now just over 2 mins, and now i see a white bar that zips across the screen, before the boot screen loads .

i've encounterd a failed hard drive in the past, and i know the catastrophic result .

SMART hasn't detected anything strange . oddly enough, but the clicking and sharp, sharp sqeaking noises will convince anyone that my something is terribly wrong .

only Hardware ECC recoverd
Raw error rate
Seek error rate
have rather high values, but they are still 'normal' or 'passing'

so has anyone in new zealand returned a faulty hard drive back to seagate? i've already begun a total backup of all my files . but i still want a working hard drive, or at least my money back from seagate . and how long did it take to get a refund/ replacement?

thanks for taking intrest .

516379 2007-01-16 06:07:00 Back up all personal data immediately.

Once that is completed, you can download Seagate's Seatools disk diagnostiic program which is burnt either to a floppy or CD and run outside of Windows. See SeaTools Desktop version (www.seagate.com ). If a fault is found you will get an error message and a DMA number. You should contact whomever you purchased the Computer/Hard drive from with this information.

Seagate also have an online version of SeaTools but I am not sure how thorough that is - See here (www.seagate.com ).

To confirm the source of your noise, you can take the side of the case off see if you can pinpoint it further.

But not the hard drive itself :)

You should take it back to the shop you got it from and get a replacement.

You can send it direct to Seagate - see their website for the procedure, and note the strict packaging instructions. However that would take ages.

516383 2007-01-16 20:13:00 You should take it back to the shop you got it from and get a replacement . That is the correct action . The seller is responsible, and there is no need to deal with Seagate at all . I think Seagate's warranty is longer than 12 months but it wouldn't matter even if it was 12 months and the drive is older than that . It is not normal life expectancy and should be replaced free of charge at no cost to you .

You don't have to wait while they send it anywhere for checking either, that's their problem, not yours . It should be a walk-in walk-out transaction, unless you bought it from PriceSpy or some other shonky outfit that tries to operate by the rules in their country of origin, in which case good luck, but don't hold your breath!

Cheers

516384 2007-01-16 21:56:00 +1 to all above.

Your HDD is about to kick the bucket. Get everything off it ASAP that you want to keep and get it back to the store.

I have had the exact same noises twice from 2 consecutive 200gig drives (both of which were replaced.)

Pricespy lists shops, they don't sell hardware.
Too many shops try to tell you its 1 year on Seagates - it is 5 years if it is a new drive.

If the shop refuses to replace it you can either bring the Disputes Tribunal into it or send direct to Seagate - Seagate will allow it but as I said, it will take ages.

516386 2007-01-16 23:27:00 Pricespy lists shops, they don't sell hardware . Yeah, I was rushing out the door and had advanced brainfade . Posted without checking . I meant the late and unlamented SuperCheap of course .

516387 2007-01-17 09:00:00 thanks very much people, your advice was very much needed . I havent touched my faulty computer since yesterday, since i made the post, i've just been using the net on P3 computer . i've decided that i already backed up most my important data, if i need to do a more comprehensive recovery, i'll plug it in as a slave drive on another computer and just copy the files off .

i checked my hardrives serial number on the seagates websites, and it says warranty will remail valid untill 2010 . that surprised me at first,bt i remember my seagate was a retail one, so it should have a 5 yr warranty .

returning it back to the dealer is the most practical idea, but i don't have the proof of purchase, i had a friend put together my system last year . . and i dont think he would be liable for any failing hardware . he might've got the hardware off some small, shady christchurch store, convincing them to replace my hard drive, without a decent proof of purchase might not be very possible .

im deciding if i can't get a return, i'l just have to get another 80gb hard drive . . a western digital caviar se, u can get them for under $80 . .
