516326 2007-01-16 01:04:00 Hi all

I downloaded a free spoken word file, and when i go to play it windows media player has a pop up box that says licence aquisition with nothing in it apart from 2 buttons Play (greyed out) and cancel, and it just hangs at this point,

I have windows media Player 9 (I'm using windows 2000) and have let it hang for ages with no result

Would this be a fault with

a) media player
b) The file
c) The download site (not making the file licence available for aquisition?) perhaps

516327 2007-01-16 01:14:00 Possibly all 3 of the above and the fact that your dealing with DRM'd .wma files. Hence also why most of the Microsoft partners who have used the "Plays for sure" DRM on their .wma files have not had a great deal of success. Microsoft has actually dropped support for its own "Plays for sure" DRM infavour of the new Zune player and system. DRM is not designed to benefit the customer but rather the recording and media industry. You could give WMP 10 a go although I don't know if this would solve your problem. I don note that you say the original file is FREE but that it is still shackled with the DRM. winmacguy (3367)
516328 2007-01-16 01:36:00 Thanks for that, I think I might give up on it for now and try it again at a later date to see if it is something to do with the download site

WMP 10 is for XP or later it won't actually run on 2000 to the best of my knowledge

The file is from a site that sells spoken world files but is from their free section

www.spokendownload.spokennetwork.com

hopefully the link works

516329 2007-01-16 01:57:00 being a free file you could trysearchinbg on either Limewire or iTunes, both of which are free to download both would probably give you the file you are looking for although obviously Limewire has all the illegal stuff on it. winmacguy (3367)
516330 2007-01-16 02:19:00 That's an interesting website, Nigel.
I'm also curious about whether anyone here has successdully downloaded anything playable from its free list.

516331 2007-01-16 04:28:00 A very interesting site indeed considering that you can't put DRM on MP3 files which play on an iPod and you can put DRM on .WMA files which don't play on an iPod yet they have a big pic on an iPod Nano at the top of the screen for "marketing purposes" no doubt

And the file that Nigel attempted to download was FREE but DRM'd as well ... go figure...?

516332 2007-01-16 05:24:00 If I were you, I'd totally remove WMP9 and search for tails and bits left in your systrem . . . run CCleaner and HJT and make sure it's absolutley gone . . . then . . . .

Reload WMP9 again and this time do not check on "Get licenses Automatically" and also leave off the part about becoming a good-guy for M$ and allow them to improve your service by letting them scan your system for updates, DRM's and licenses .

It's all a scam to lock you out of your own files and such . . . let 'em eat cake and just go about doing your own thing without input by "them" at all .

PS: Stay away from LimeWire . . . it is a red flag here in the US to the authorities concerning illegal dnlds and file-sharing .

BTW: having a shredder on your system is also prima facia evidence of illegal activities too . . . although they haven't pushed that button yet . Spybot S&D has one, so does CCleaner . . . . just thought you'd like to know .
