516307 2007-01-16 00:50:00 Ouch, although this could go either way. I'm guessing we'll get to keep free local calling, but the way the funding works will change. Or maybe it won't be all local calling free anymore, but x free local minutes/month. Erayd (23)
516308 2007-01-16 01:07:00 How long do pple call "local calls" for?
I personally don't do a lot. Our phonecalls are those 3min or shorter. We only call shops and tradesman a few calls now and then ... We may do the odd longer call when a special occasion or anniversary.

you would be in the minority. Many people use free local calling to chat to friends with, spending hours upon hours on the phone. Obviously it is not affordable to do this on a cell phone!. Woman in particular love the free local calling and take full advantage of it.

516310 2007-01-16 02:51:00 I think if that happens here in NZ I think we will fellow what’s happing in the UK e.g.: mobile phones might get even more poplar.

Or even VoIP might even get more poplar.

516311 2007-01-16 05:55:00 If I added up the time I spend chatting on the phone, I would guess no more that 30mins a month..... Baldy (26)

Yes but some of the people on here probably have different social skills to the majority of the population. I talk on the phone quite a bit, so free local calling will affect me and my business, which also has free local calling on a home/business plan.

Do telecom know you are using it as a business line? I would have expected them to jump on the chance to call you a business & make you pay business rates.

I'm on a home business plan, so yes they know. The fact is that if they did make home business pay business rates (whatever they would be) then homebased business simply wouldn't disclose it to them, and they would just run it as a residential line. Home businesses don't have to pay anymore than residential customers.

I love that tactful way of putting it, roger-
"different social skills to the majority of the population."

If it comes to rarely using their landline for local calls, they're a definite minority.
(The telephone's a social lifeline for more than just the housebound. And mobiles cost... )

To me, that implies either too few friends or a preferenve for email over the sound of an actual voice.

Not all of my older friends have email.
And those who are au fait with computers certainly can't type as fast as they can talk...
