515773 2007-01-14 06:15:00 Greetings again,

I frequently do recordings using Goldwave for extended periods of time, however the problem I face is the source Im recording from (Person speaking into a Mic) isnt always very stable. Sometimes its quite, other times its very loud when the person raises their voice. Im wanting to know if theres a way that I can easily 'normalize' the volume as I record, rather than having to set the volume very low and then having the volume normalized across the one file and then maximized.

Any suggestions?

Cheap / free would be super, and ideally something with a small memory / cpu footprint. Adobe Audition is probably too resource-intensive.

Many thanks in advance

Chill.

515775 2007-01-14 06:48:00 Audacity has a Normalise function.
And it's free.

Tried it I have not.

515776 2007-01-14 07:08:00 You're probably more after a compressor, rather than a "normalise" function. The compressor, set up correctly, will "quieten" the audio when it is loud, to be consistent with the "quiet" audio. I have only used hardware-based devices like this, or post-recording tools... so I can't help you with an inline compressor software. somebody (208)
515777 2007-01-14 08:14:00 Maybe THATS my problem, as 'normalizing' is something usually done across multiple audio files to maintain a consistent volume level :D

Thanks all.. any more suggestions would be great.

I have Audacity, I know the family have used it (NFI why but one of the members PAID for a CD off the 'net that had "Great office software, award winning photo editing suite, powerful audio..." and it came with OpenOffice, TheGimp, Audacity... :D
