517504 2007-01-19 05:15:00 My sis-in-law's 3-5 year old PBell pc has no Windows XP Home disc.I found the I386 folder on her C drive, which I understand are her XP installation files. Been trying to merge that file and SP2 with Autostreamer but it doesn't recognize I386 as a Windows thing. Then tried to burn the folder as an ISO , but haven't managed to do that,it is possible?
Any suggestions, apart from going back to whoever supplied the pc, please. Is it possible for me to supply her with my XP Home/SP2 disc and input her Windows key to reinstall Windows? Thanks.

517505 2007-01-19 05:20:00 It would be a better idea to use the restore disks if she has any. Otherwise, you should be able to use any OEM windows XP home CD. Greven (91)
517506 2007-01-19 05:50:00 It probably never came with the WinXP CD, as a result of the OEM liciencing. sroby (11519)
517507 2007-01-19 07:22:00 No restore discs either!!Have succeded in burning the folder to an ISO, but no joy with Autostreamer, still doesn't recognize it. Brought 2 copies of the folder home with me,one on my flash drive and the other on a cd, still no joy from either.
So I can't use my full XP Home disc to load on her pc?

Neil.......I would say YES. My XP is an earlier version tham Maryann's one. Hers has SP2 with it whereas mine does not. Her version was loaded onto my new hard drive , because of the SP2. BUT. I had to use the Key from my XP Disc. If you know their version Key, there is no reason why you cannot use your CD, it is the Key that is important. PJ.

517509 2007-01-19 08:03:00 Usually an XP OEM version will not recognise a full version CD Key and vice versa. Used to until ~2005, now been tightened up.

So they have to be the same genre of XP.

517510 2007-01-19 09:24:00 Thanks PJ and godfather. I found the Windows key with Magical JellyBean Keyfinder and emailed that info along with motherboard info ,etc, from the Everest program to myself, so I can hunt for drivers.
Gf, the pc is a few years old, so I might try my Home cd which I've already streamed with SP2,next time we're in Gisborne!
Man, it's terrible trying to work with SP1, settings all different or missing.

517511 2007-01-19 09:47:00 The key you got via Jellybean will be the factory Skeloten key, They make an image and use it on all PC's in the batch, which would most probally number in the thousands,

It most definitly wont work with any version of XP,anywhere, anyhow, or anyhow.

Besides that, You should be looking for a recovery method, The install files should be on a hidden partition, Press the right keys on bootup and bingo, the crap starts to happen, New install with all the drivers in place.

As for drivers (if you cant find a way to lauch the revovery whodackie) use a program to ack em up to CD, easy.

And seeing as XP will hiude items on teh start menu that haven't been used for awhile, have a second look for an inbuilt method for creating your own recovery CD's.

517512 2007-01-19 17:00:00 gidday,

You will probably find the recovery of xp, on a hidden partition,
usualy there is a listing on the all programs list, or reboot, and tap
F10

The MS change may well have been only at their end, in the validation database used for re-activation.

A copy of OEM, manufacturer pre installed with a "Golden Key" will often not need activation as the OS is BIOS locked (applies to many of the major brands) and cannot therefore be loaded or used on any other PC anyhow, but using a different genre CD will trigger activation, which may then fail at the MS end.
