2007-01-19 01:24:00 | when isp's this year install their own equipment in telecom exchanges, does that mean if i'm on xtra and i change to orcon, will i be using orcon's equipment in the telephone exchange? Will i be completely disconnected form all of telecom's hardware in the telecom exchange? | lance4k (4644) | |
2007-01-19 01:56:00 | It depends on whether the ISP in question will continue to resell telecom, or decides to install their own hardware, and this will be based on location. In low population areas, most ISPs will continue to resell telecoms adsl. Only a few ISPs will be able to afford to install their own hardware, as it is very expensive to buy and maintain, and they will proably concentrate solely on the main cities. Rural and small towns will not have much choice, and internet may in fact end up going up in price for them. Don't be surprised if not too much changes with unbundling, apart from perhaps faster speeds. I expect telecom to have sorted out most of their problems this year with adsl. | rogerp (6864) | |

2007-01-19 02:23:00 | ...I expect telecom to have sorted out most of their problems this year with adsl. I have my doubts. Telelcom certainly have the resources and technology to sort it out but GREED will prevent them from doing so! Put it in simple terms, they just don't bother to do it.

2007-01-19 04:49:00 | I agree with you there bk T You're forgetting, that once they have competition, they will put a lot more resources into it, if it affects their profitability. Out of any ISP, telecom have the resources to provide the best network, however there currently isn't the return on investment to warrent it. Ihug or i net did promise investing millions into the network if it became unbundled, but once it did unbundle, they sold up so I can't see that happening now . Telecom are releasing adsl2 this year too, but only avaliable if you live close to an exchange.

2007-01-20 01:39:00 | yeap. agree with everyone.. i think once isp starts to install anything to telecom exchange they will bring out new plans and try to get in as much customers as possible.. and go large will be fixed. cuz if u were them and not much competition u will do the same cuz no one is getting any better. personally i think there is nothing wrong with go large and there bull**** policies, but just limited it and when the time comes they will UNLEASH it which they should of done. | AMD (11356) | |
| 517500 | 2007-01-20 02:39:00 | You have to realise, Telecom have trapped a large deal of loyal customers, things that other companies do, just won't steal them away. Telecom have to trip big time up for that to happen but even doing that doesn't mean anything, look at MS. I see Telecom slowly working away while competitors try to tip the scales, however it's the large companies that will be targeted and the dense areas, where Telecom will try to keep them happy and the competition out. What I want to know is, will it ever get to a stage where it's worthwhile to install better equipment, technology etc. I don't think I'll be getting Fibre Optics this Xmas except as the fake branches on the lighted Xmas Tree. | 517501 | 2007-01-20 03:50:00 | when isp's this year install their own equipment in telecom exchanges, does that mean if i'm on xtra and i change to orcon, will i be using orcon's equipment in the telephone exchange? Will i be completely disconnected form all of telecom's hardware in the telecom exchange? AFAIK you will still be dependent on Telecom's network backbone, because your ISP won't be able to afford to go past local exchange installations, which means that you remain sandwiched between a Telecom backbone service and the wiring of your own premises. I predict that a lot of Telecom haters are going to be sorely disappointed come that day, because they will find that their poor performance doesn't change at all, but they now have two help lines to call, one of which (Telecom) will not be interested because they will know the figures into your ISP's equipment in their exchange, and your ISP will blame Telecom. Catch 22  For installations in older houses with non-twisted pair wiring (the old legacy three-wire system) the crappy old wiring may prevent any worthwhile speeds. Telecom used to have specific exclusions on their website as to DSL performance, excluding all old 3-wire systems from any undertakings as to ADSL speeds etc. I took note of that warning and rewired my house from point of entry (in my garage, close to the street) all the way through to my office in 2-wire Cat5E, then installed a Telecom splitter which feeds my router also via Cat5E. While I was about it I rewired the rest on the phone system in Cat5E and ran out 6 phone & data feeds to likely locations, but that is another story. The situation is not unlike that of the introduction of wireless, which proved to be a damned sight worse than Telecom's service, both speeds and latency being big issues IIRC. I'll bet that a lot of problems would go away if users isolated their DSL service right at the point of entry with a quality splitter, and didn't have phone lines involved at all. I don't doubt that Telecom has a few problems, but if it is truly systemic, why doesn't it affect all of us? I see some slowdown at peak times, but otherwise enjoy fast service and 100% up time at my end. I have suffered two Telcom exchange system failures over the years, but apart from that the only point of difference is the quality of my connection at this end. Quite frankly I don't think allowing ISPs to put equipment in exchanges will make all that much of a difference, any more than allowing them to resell Jetstream/dsl has, judging by the complaints here.
