517333 2007-01-18 22:16:00 Hi all

I need a network cable that is about 50m long i have looked on the tricky dickie site but they seem a tad dear,
when i look on trademe they are a heck of a lot cheaper, but are they any good

thanks

517334 2007-01-18 22:46:00 Do you mean Cat5E cable?

If so, I have always heard that over 50 feet /about 16.66 meters, there is a very severe degradation of signal...

I run a 50 footer and have no real troubles...but I do notice some lag and loss of picture - sound sync at that distance.

517335 2007-01-18 23:07:00 The standards say that Ethernet should work up to 100 m.

A cable from Trademe should be OK, but it depends on who made it.

The cable is made to a standard; but there are two different sorts of plug made (for solid and stranded conductors) and some people don't know that.

DSE will guarantee their cables.

517336 2007-01-18 23:17:00 TradeMe cables should be fine, they are just plugs at the end of a bit of wire.

I run 1X100 and about 3X40 meter cables here with no loss of anything at all, I would guess you would have to run over 300metres to notice any slowdown. Streaming over distance will be fine, just moving very large files you may notice a slow down.

I think the standards say max length of 100meters

517337 2007-01-18 23:51:00 Its a 100m.

517339 2007-01-19 06:44:00 Try any local electical wholesaler.
Ideal, Mastertrade, Rexel etc.
Most of these guys sell these at a fraction of the DSE price
Example. 3 metre @ Ideal $6.99 5metre @ DSE $14.98

Makes sense to me

517340 2007-01-19 10:30:00 There is an electrical wholesaler down the industrial part of Victoria ave that sells cat5e. I'm not sure if they sell to the public, but you can always ask. Greven (91)
517341 2007-01-19 10:48:00 I have had no problems with cables from trademe. As someone said, its just cable with plugs on both ends. Dannz (1668)
