517304 2007-01-18 09:35:00 I have been given a Hyundai Imagequest Q17 LCD monitor. Sounds like a great gift, but the reason I was given it is because it is unreliable. Every so often, at unpredictable intervals, the screen just goes black. If you power it off, sometimes it recovers after a few minutes, sometimes not for hours.

Does anyone have any ideas (a) what the problem might be and (b) is it fixable?

Separate question: the monitor has a DVI input. As my video card also has a DVI connector, does that mean that if I splashed out for a cable (a) the monitor might work and (b) I would get a better picture if it was working? I know that's two questions, but I rely on the innate generosity of PF1-ers to give great value in their answers, as always. :)

517305 2007-01-18 09:40:00 The DVI connection should work if u get a cable.

I take it its connected via a normal VGA connection?

It might be the VGA connection thats stuffed?

Whats the videocard? ATI/Nvidia? Just as long as the drivers are installed it should work.

517306 2007-01-18 09:45:00 It is definitely not the vga connection in the video card, as the same problem occurred on a different PC - which is why I was given the monitor. I guess the cable could be dodgy - I'll see if I have another cable and try that. The video card is a ATI Radeon 9250 AGP.

Tried another cable - still not working.

It might be the vga connection on the monitor, not the cable or your card. Does the monitor go into standy, or completely off, this would point to power issue or not.

517309 2007-01-18 22:01:00 There is definitely a signal of some sort getting to the monitor, as the LED on the bezel changes between green and orange if I reboot. As of right now, the monitor hasn't revived at all since the last time it went blank - about 12 hours ago, but the LED is showing green, which presumably means it thinks it is working. Tony (4941)
517310 2007-01-18 22:28:00 May just be the backlight faulty. Get the room light (or daylight) at the right angle and level, and you may be able to see a faint image on screen. If so, that would confirm it.

It will still have warranty applicable, even if the nominal 12 months (if that was the period) has expired so see if you can get the purchase documentation from the donor. If it is under 2 years old you would have a strong case for full replacement from the supplier, but the issue of who purchased could come up. Just the same, warranties automatically transfer with items received as gifts so don't be put off by this.

Even if documentation is lost, the serial number should be enough to confirm age etc and activate warranty action.

If you can't be bothered, give it to me :D I need a new monitor! I'll even collect it.

Cheers

517312 2007-01-18 22:44:00 I wondered about the backlight, but I can't see anything on the screen at all, even with a desk lamp shining at all sorts of angles. I don't know how old the monitor is, but I just noticed a sticker with "TCO 99" on it, which is not a good sign :) Tony (4941)

Thats a compliance sticker, not the year it was manufacturered. It will therefore be newer than 1999, and hardly anyone made LCD monitors back then. It is probably no older than 3years, as it has only been in the last 3 years that these cheap branded monitors have been around.
