517415 2007-01-18 23:18:00 Dell 5100, XP Home
Initially the blue screen came up. Unsure of the messege.
Wouldn't boot HD but CD sometimes & not for long. Then would beep at me & stop dead. still powered...but nothing.
Switched to a new Sata drive, Chucked in XP, began formating drive, 15% into the format....back to the beeping again.
Help please ...KL

517416 2007-01-18 23:27:00 So, did XP finish installing on the SATA?

Or did it crash during the install?

And how many beeps are u hearing??

Is it beep beep or beep pause beep etc? Or a continuous beep?

517417 2007-01-18 23:30:00 No, format didn't finish.
6 long beeps (2 seconds each)

517418 2007-01-18 23:39:00 Well I would remove everything except the vidcard, hdd and ram .

Then try again . If it still crashes if there's 2 ram simms remove one see if its any better .

If it still crashes remove the other . And try again .

And if it still crashes test the ram with something like memtest .

517419 2007-01-19 00:09:00 Pulled both Ram out & put one back. PC now boots OK from CD. Each Ram runs fine without the other....and now with each other? Not booted to HD yet.
Running DocMemory Ram Diagnostic now. So far OK.
Does this indicate a Ram issue or a Ram connection issue.
Can I use the other slots safely?
KiwiLinc (6595)
517420 2007-01-19 00:23:00 Depends if the mobo has 4 slots for dual channel .

And if the system supports dual channel . The simms have to be the same size and brand for this .

If it does, its better to put the ram simms in whatever slots for dual channel .

Otherwise, it'll run in single channel mode .

If the ram seems to be fine now, whoever put them in, may not have put them in properly . Or far enough . That'll make a system crash, if the simms aren't in properly .

517421 2007-01-19 00:31:00 Untill now, this Dell was as it arrived from the factory.
Unsure about dual channel

517422 2007-01-19 00:33:00 See if XP installs now then.

If it shows a message this time on the BSOD, tell us what it says.

517423 2007-01-19 00:44:00 Ram passed the test.
I'll chuck the original drive back in and see if it boots.

517424 2007-01-19 00:50:00 Drive booted ok, went through the XP boot screen to an empty blue screen.
Unsure what has happened to it before I got it.
Will try a repair.
