517393 2007-01-18 19:32:00 On starting Win 98se all I get is a blue screen with the manufacterers logo on it. Windows does't load. Pressing escape brings up :
640k sys Ram passed
62m Extended Ram passed
0128k Cache Scram pased
sys Bios shadowed
video Bios Shadowed
UMB upper limit segment address E8B3
Is this a hardware or a software failure, is there a way forward.
Thanks
Eddie

Sounds like it's not even getting to the splash screen.

Does it have an error message on the screen or does it just sit there?
Can you get into the BIOS, usually by pressing DEL but could also be F1, F2, F10, F11, F12 or CTRL+ALT+ESC.
It should say on the screen somewhere what to press though.

517396 2007-01-18 22:43:00 Does it give a prompt after that information? If so, try entering the "win" command.

If this is a "new" computer you have bought, it might not have Windows on it; people often delete the Windows directory, leaving just the root directory DOS boot stuff, so the computer can be shown to work. (If that is the case, you could try the "undelete" command. That sometimes works ;) )

517401 2007-01-19 18:36:00 Most computers of that time came with a Win98SE floppy boot disk.
The normal boot sequence was set A: then C: in the bios.

If you have not got one try here:-
http://www.bootdisk.com/

Insert the resultant floppy in the A: drive and power up.

You also may have a dead CMOS battery which means all BIOS sesettings will be lost and so therefore may not know it has a hard drive.

To get into the BIOS pressing F1 is a matter of timing. By the time the logo comes up it is probably too late.

517402 2007-01-19 19:18:00 Sounds like its not reading anything from the harddrive.
My g/f's Acer did the same thing, turned out to be dead harddrive

Check all harddrive connections, replace cable, try again.
Then swap witrh another harddrive, and see if that boots up
