518085 2007-01-21 20:59:00 I’ve just put together a “U Beaut” computer from a selection of junk. Now whilst it’s going like a rocket slid on rails we have one small problem which is as follows.

The two USB ports on the front of the machine don’t work properly. Whilst the device (Flash Card /Camera) is picked up the message is it’s not recognised?

The rear USB Ports attached to the rear of the Motherboard work fine.

Ok, I’ve checked and double checked that the connectors are on correctly and I’m confident they are.

However, I have a theory to float to you good people.

The front USB ports are connected to the Motherboard with simple unshielded twisted multi strand wire. I’m wondering if the port on the motherboard is USB 2.0 and the Device is USB 2.0 and they require a Shielded connection wire.

Anyone any thoughts?

518086 2007-01-21 21:05:00 If the front USB you have a split wire like 2 pins if I remem ... or if you can twist the "twin" pins around and plug it it .. try it ...

In my exp the back USB are easy as they are mounted to the mobo.
The front is fussy, whenever I plug the USB cable into the front USB its actually upside down.

518087 2007-01-21 22:22:00 Many new computers have unshielded wires as you describe to connect the front USB ports.
Check you have not reversed the data wires [second and third], also if you have 2 front outlets, that the wires are in the correct sets and you have not inadvertently got them mixed-up.
Some motherboards do not have completely independent on board USB pin outlets, check with your motherboard manual [download one if you have not been given one]
It will come right for you!

518088 2007-01-21 23:22:00 The 5v & Data+ & Data- are on three connector plugs. Only the Ground is seperate. So the wires are in the right place.

The exact message is: "One of your USB Devices on this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it. For assistance solving this problem click here."

Unfortunately clicking the balloon is of no help.

However, the flashdrives that Windows suggests have malfunctioned work perfectly in the rear ports.

Got me.

518089 2007-01-21 23:54:00 Take a photo of what you've done and post it.

Is what you've done something like this??

Top row: (from left to right - if the header is 5 on top, 4 on the bottom)

+5 -D +D Ground and the 5th pin is empty.

518090 2007-01-22 00:51:00 Ok guys, I’ve got it working but I can’t explain just what was happening .

I deliberately swapped USB “A” & USB “B” on the motherboard so that USB2 went to Socket A on the motherboard & USB1 goes to Socket B . & they both now work fine!

This required further investigation so I removed the front cover and found the USB sockets there were wired into a pc board that appeared to be something like an impedance matching splitter .

However, I’m at a loss to explain what function this PC board serves?

Anybody help with this one?

I just hate fixing something and not being able to explain the cause and effect . :D
